Role Overview

The Academic Physician / Teaching Faculty provides academic, teaching, research, and clinical oversight to IHCHS. Education is broadly defined to include teaching, learner assessment, curriculum development, mentoring, and administrative leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Academic & Teaching Duties

  • Teaching & Mentorship: Teach and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows. Evaluate performance using student feedback, Program Director reviews, and ARP committee standards.

  • Curriculum & Accreditation: Aid the Program Director in planning, executing, and evaluating program activities to ensure full compliance with ACGME, Residency Review Committee, and specialty board standards.

  • Educational Leadership: Participate in lectures, grand rounds, training programs, and educational committees. Foster critical thinking, rational debate, and scholarly inquiry.

  • Scholarly Guidance: Coach learners in scholarly projects, including abstract/poster presentations, case reports, and publications.

Clinical Investigation & Health Services Research

  • Advance new knowledge through clinical trials, quality improvement (QI), health services research, translational research, implementation science, and health informatics.

  • Collaborate on team science, clinical care innovations, technology commercialization, community engagement, and global health initiatives.

Clinical Practice Advancement & Quality Improvement

  • Serve as a role model in direct patient care, history/physical exams, diagnostics, lab ordering, and treatment administration across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.

  • Develop care algorithms, protocols, decision-support tools, and quality/safety metrics.

  • Review clinical records to ensure quality management and standard-of-care adherence.

Administration & Leadership

  • Serve on internal/external committees to drive organizational goals and program development.

  • Oversee administrative functions associated with roles such as Program Director or Associate Program Director.

Site Director Responsibilities (If Applicable - Min 0.1 FTE)

  • For Site Directors overseeing residents from external sponsoring institutions as a participating site:

  • Maintain a high-quality educational environment complying with ACGME standards and Program Letters of Agreement.

  • Lead faculty development, comprehensive resident/faculty evaluations, and issue resolution.

  • Partner with the department chair and external Program Director on curriculum, rotation scheduling, simulation labs, and scholarly activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: M.D. or D.O. from an accredited institution (verified).

  • Licensure & Certification: Active (or in-process) state medical license; active BLS for Healthcare Providers; ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification in related specialty.

  • Privileges: Active privileges at an Intermountain Hospital and credentialed by Select Health.

  • Experience:

    • 3+ years leading successful clinical improvement projects.

    • 3+ years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.

    • Proven experience in documentation improvement and utilization review.

    • Experience managing change, implementing safety technologies, and leading clinicians.

  • Skills: Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication; strong collaborative leadership and clinical competence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training in improvement science (Lean, Six Sigma, Advanced Training Program, or Project Management).

  • Experience navigating complex, integrated health systems (hospitals, ambulatory, post-acute).

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Communication & Vision: Ability to clearly communicate verbally, hear spoken information/alarms, and read computer monitors and documents.

  • Dexterity: Fine motor skills to manipulate delicate medical equipment, operate computers/office tech, and type clinical documentation.

  • Mobility: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and engage in fast-paced interactions with staff, patients, and visitors (including emergency settings).

  • Scheduled Weekly Hours: 8

  • Hourly Pay Range: $7.25 - $999.99/hr (Dependent on experience)
