Overview
The Salt Lake County Extension Summer Garden Intern is responsible for supporting the Salt Lake County 4-H Garden program at the Bastian Agricultural Center in South Jordan, Utah.
Program OverviewThe Salt Lake County 4-H Junior Master Gardener program offers hands‑on and experiential lessons in all areas of garden and plant science for youth, including basic botany, planting, disease and pest maintenance, pollination and support of pollinators, beekeeping, harvesting and food preservation techniques. The main garden at the Bastian Agricultural Center is home to 50+ varieties of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers.
Youth learn both traditional and regenerative growing methods, and they are encouraged to explore leadership and career pathways in plant science, food science, or gardening.

- Assist with maintenance of the 4-H garden, including planting, watering, weeding, pest/disease checks, irrigation monitoring and harvesting.
- Attend and help teach twice‑monthly 4‑H Junior Master Gardener youth club meetings and lessons.
- Plan occasional garden education activities for 4‑H youth.
- Create garden outreach activities and plan programs for community members to recruit and strengthen the program.
- Provide mentorship for 4‑H garden program youth.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Excellent initiative, self‑starter, reliable and dependable.
- Experience with gardening or small‑scale agriculture.
- Past experience in 4‑H or a similar youth leadership program; experience with mentoring or working with youth.
- Experience with community outreach or building community partnerships.
$16.00/hr
ADAMust be willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and in rough terrain (dirt, gravel, etc.) for an extended period of time. Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and/or extreme cold. This position requires moderate physical activity and sufficient strength for lifting up to 50 pounds, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, standing, and repetitive hand motions.
