About Utah Valley Refugees

Utah Valley Refugees a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Utah County. UVR resettles refugees through its affiliate Church World Services, and helps them access education, healthcare, employment and housing. Their mission is to empower refugees in their quest to become self-reliant.

Position Description

As an ESL Volunteer Teacher at Utah Valley Refugees, you will be expected to keep up to date with our lesson schedule. The lessons are fairly simple and do not take much time to prepare but you will be expected to prepare outside of class times. You will remain in close contact with our coordinator, Jennifer, if there is ever a problem about class or making the schedule.

You’re expected to be outgoing, flexible with teaching, able to speak publicly, and become aware of the needs of our students. They’re a fun group and they will want to become your friends as well as students.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Teach organized English classes
  • Set up one on one English tutoring sessions with refugees as needed
Requirements
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED. Associates degree or higher education.
  • Must be willing to help or have experience working with refugees, schools or community
  • Must be fluent in English and able to volunteer 2 - 4 hours a week
  • Must have previous teaching experience (ESL teaching experience preferred)
  • Must have patience, understanding, flexibility, and an unceasingly positive attitude
  • Must have a strong desire to improve the English language skills of refugee students
  • Must be able to pass the background check (BCI)

Only qualified candidates will be contacted for the interview and after the interview if accepted, you will be contacted and scheduled for the training.

Background Check Requirement

All volunteers working with directly with refugees are required to provide a Utah BCI background check prior to working as a volunteer. A federal background check may also be required based on the volunteer position.
