Multicultural Advisor

This position primarily advises, mentors, and coaches BYU multicultural students in academic, financial, cultural, and social needs. The advisor utilizes and assesses learning outcomes to direct student advisement and assists students in successfully transitioning to BYU, connecting them to critical support resources, and engaging them in extracurricular opportunities to achieve the Aims of a BYU education.

Responsibilities
  • Continuing Multicultural Student Advisement: Provide holistic one‑on‑one advisement (academic, financial, personal, cultural) using student development models; build supportive relationships, guide graduation planning, document interactions, track progress, and connect students to campus resources.
  • Prospective and Newly Admitted Student Advisement: Provide accurate guidance on admissions, financial aid, scholarship applications, course registration, major selection, transition support, and success strategies.
  • Citizenship and Professional Development: Participate in trainings, conferences, and ongoing professional development.
Qualifications
  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Master’s degree in advisement, counseling, higher education, social work, or related area and 2 years of advisement experience; or Master’s degree in a related area with graduate coursework in counseling, advising, social work or higher education and 2 years of advisement experience.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, program management, and the University’s mission and Aims of a BYU Education.
  • Strong initiative, independent thinking, organizational and prioritization skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work autonomously.
  • Professional judgment, decision‑making ability, boundary setting, and creative problem‑solving.
  • Experience in mentoring, advising, and educating students; strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Computer and database proficiency, including multimedia technology.
  • A broad perspective on diverse cultures and the challenges faced by students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Research, analytical, evaluative, and assessment skills for program improvement.
  • Leadership of programs, projects, or services; financial resource management; coordination with staff; supervision of student employees; and outcome assessment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in academic advising, counseling, psychology, social work, higher education, or related field and 4+ years of higher education academic advising or counseling experience.

    Pay Grade 52, Typical Starting Pay $65,500 – $84,500.
