Academic Advisor The College of Fine Arts and Communications Advisement Center provides professional, compassionate, and inclusive service to all individuals as we advise and empower students. We aspire to lead in change making interactions to enhance the learning experiences of our creative, talented, dedicated, and vibrant student population.

This is a temporary position that is expected to last up to 3 years

What you’ll do in this position:

Provide compassionate and empowering academic advisement according to professional theory, methods, and delivery in communicating with students in one-on-one interactions.

Develop collaborative relationships with college, departments/schools, faculty, and staff contacts to facilitate open communication regarding curriculum, admissions to majors, events participation, registration, unique student cases, and other needs.

Maintain a sense of team unity in maximizing routine interactions and in contributing to seasonal/occasional needs (ie: support college events, participate in hiring/training needs, accept delegated assignments, attend recurring meetings, etc.)Facilitate and celebrate student success starting with New Student Orientation through graduation.

Engage in professional development activities to retain currency and relevancy in advising practices.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

A firm commitment to the mission of BYUMaster’s degree OR Advisement certification (or equivalent graduate coursework) and 1-4 years in advisement-related experience

Excellent skills in communication (verbal, written, interpersonal and listening), decision-making, and problem-solving

Knowledge and competence in academic student services

Ability to guard student privacy according to federal law (FERPA)
Ability to discern when to act independently vs when to reach out to proven resources

Familiarity with the BYU environment, website, policies and procedures, etc.

Ability to enforce academic policies with clarity and without confrontation or defensiveness

Ability to interact well with a wide variety of students and circumstances (ie: distressed students, challenging situations, stressful seasons, etc.)Strict sense of accuracy, organization efficiency, and timeliness

Computer experience and proficiency in basic office computer programs and equipment
