Required Degree:
PhD in Hebrew Bible, New Testament, ANES, Education, or closely related field from an accredited university. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:

Candidates must demonstrate unusual potential for excellent teaching of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, in particular courses on the Book of Mormon and the Bible, to undergraduate students s will often, but not always, be demonstrated by teaching experience in religious education in the Church Educational System (CES).

Duties / Expectations

The BYU Department of Ancient Scripture is dedicated to furthering the Aims of a BYU education, which provide students with an education that is spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, character building, and leads to lifelong learning and service. The Department seeks to hire individuals who have demonstrated the ability to provide this type of education through the highest quality teaching, citizenship, and scholarship.

Candidates must have the personal character, faith, testimony, and qualities of life to serve as powerful role models for our students. Candidates must be familiar with, support, and strive to fulfill the principles and direction contained in Strengthening Religious Education in Institutions of Higher Education ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).).

Teaching typically, full‑time Professional faculty will teach six sections (two credits each) of classes offered by the Department of Ancient Scripture each fall/winter semester.

  • Normally, this fall/winter teaching load will consist of two different class preps (e.g., three sections of Book of Mormon and three sections of New Testament).
  • Class sizes range between 180 and 240 students.
  • Candidates will also typically teach three sections (two credits each) of classes offered by the Department of Ancient Scripture during either spring or summer term (normally consisting of one class prep).
  • Funds will be provided to hire student assistants to help with grading, if desired.

Citizenship:
Full‑time faculty must be good citizens in the Department of Ancient Scripture as well as at the college (BYU Religious Education) and university levels. This includes attending department, college, and university faculty meetings as well as fulfilling committee obligations and other ad‑hoc assignments.

Gospel‑related Creative Works or Publications:
There is no scholarship or publication requirement for Professional faculty. We are eager to identify faculty members who are carefully trained in specific disciplines or particular books of scripture and who are well acquainted with all of the standard works and the teachings of modern apostles and prophets. A solid foundation in the doctrines of the restored gospel is critical to our work.

While publishing is not a requirement for rank advancement, Professional faculty members are welcome to pursue the production of content related to excellent teaching and improving understanding of the restored gospel.
