The Coordinator of Reentry and Student Success of the Prison Education program will engage with SLCC students, both during incarceration and post-release, to provide support for a community of learning as prison education students pursue their academic goals. This will also include the distribution and maintenance of electronic and physical learning resources for prison education program students. The emphasis of this position will be on providing support to students, both during incarceration and post-incarceration.

This is an at-will position.

Reentry Support Services
  • The Coordinator of the Prison Education is responsible for providing direct support to students both during their incarceration and after their incarceration.
  • The coordinator is expected to maintain contact with PEP students and help them navigate the college experience.
  • Assist with retention efforts for PEP students.
  • Assist with the development of academic plans for students with the Assistant Director of Prison Education.
  • Meet with students upon release to assist with transition to our mainstream campuses.
  • Provide students referrals to campus and community resources as appropriate.
  • Work to establish a community of learning to assist students, both during incarceration and post-incarceration.
Student Services Support
  • Assist students in learning more about prison education degree pathways.
  • Answer questions regarding academic and career goals.
  • Provide on-site student support at the new student lounge.
  • The coordinator will work with SLCC staff and Department of Corrections to organize student events and resources, including graduation, orientation, student events, job fairs, as well as admissions and registration events with the correctional facility.
Program Coordination of Physical and Technological Assets
  • The coordinator is also responsible for the distribution and maintenance of PEP electronic and physical assets for student use in the Utah State Correctional Facility.
  • Interface with Utah Department of Corrections personnel to maintain clearances for these resources.
Important knowledge, skills and abilities for the Coordinator of Prison Education include:
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and cross-cultural skills.
  • Knowledge pertaining to prison programs and educational systems.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Project-management skills.
  • Proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office applications, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
  • Ability to work comfortably with incarcerated students in a supportive and non-judgmental fashion.
  • The coordinator will split their time between the prison and the SLCC campus and will often need to work non-traditional hours.
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • One (1) to four (4) years of direct full-time experience in Higher Education.
  • Must be able to successfully pass background check administered by Utah Department of Corrections.
  • Valid driver's license. Education and relevant experience may be substituted when the minimum qualification does not require a specific degree, license, certification, accreditation standard, or other requirement for which substitution would be inappropriate. Trade off 1:1 full-time experience/education requirement. Part-time experience can be considered on a prorated basis (Trade off 2:1).
  • Experience working within a carceral setting.
  • 1 year teaching experience in higher education.
