Pay Range (G28): $28.08 – $32.56 per hour (depending on experience). Part‑time, 25 scheduled hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and publish plain‑English explanations of upcoming Council agenda items, public policy issues, and major Council decisions.
  • Develop recurring public information content including Council Meeting previews, recaps, FAQ and myth‑versus‑fact explainers.
  • Create proactive messaging to address likely public questions or misconceptions before issues become controversial.
  • Research, interview, write, and edit stories related to City Council actions, neighborhood issues, redevelopment projects, housing, budgeting, transportation, and other civic topics.
  • Translate technical, legal, or policy‑heavy information into understandable public‑facing communications.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with journalists, editors, and community media voices (newspapers, television, radio, podcasts, university publications, and digital media organizations).
  • Monitor local media and social media conversations regarding Council topics, identify opportunities for clarification or proactive communication, and coordinate with Council leadership for interviews and media inquiries.
  • Assist with management of Council social media accounts and digital communications platforms, develop social media strategies and recurring content series to improve resident engagement and public understanding, and analyze performance based on audience engagement trends.
  • Prepare graphics, captions, short‑form video content, and multimedia storytelling materials.
  • Coordinate timely communication before, during, and after Council meetings.
  • Identify innovative methods for improving resident communication and public engagement, including AI‑assisted tools.
  • Assist with maintaining a coordinated communications calendar tied to Council agendas, projects, and major initiatives.
  • Help ensure official Council communications remain factual, professional, transparent, and accessible.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Public Administration, English, Digital Media, or a closely related field.
  • One (1) year of professional experience in journalism, reporting, media relations, strategic communications, public affairs, digital communications, or related professional communications.
  • Preference given to individuals with professional newsroom or reporting experience and/or experience covering government, politics, public policy, or civic affairs.
  • Experience producing multimedia or social media content for public audiences is a plus.
  • Experience with photography, video editing, podcasting, or digital storytelling is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AI‑assisted communication tools and workflows is a plus.
Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed in the order submitted. The first screening will be held on June
22,2026. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications to be considered. Selected candidates will need to pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Failure to meet these requirements may result in dismissal or ineligibility for future positions.
