Job Description

This role assists a nurse manager in managing daily nursing activities within a nursing department, providing leadership and performing management functions such as resource allocation, maintaining a safe working environment, and optimizing patient care.

Assistant Managers must be in a department that has more than 100 caregivers and have direct reports. Nurse managers must receive approval if circumstances warrant an assistant manager but do not meet the defined criteria.

Essential Functions

Job duties are distributed as follows: 60% Tactical (day‑to‑day activities such as staffing and equipment availability), 35% Operational (budget management, supply acquisition, and employee performance evaluations), and 5% Strategic (developing goals to meet the organizational strategic plan and holding employees accountable).

  • Develop departmental structure, processes, and outcome standards for one unit.
  • Conduct employee evaluations and participate in the hiring process.
  • Assist with development, implementation, and management of annual capital/operating and personnel budgets.
  • Allocate resources to promote efficient, effective, safe, and compassionate nursing care based on current standards.
  • Facilitate collaborative decision‑making and provide departmental perspectives to executive decisions.
  • Coordinate with the nurse manager to ensure sufficient competent staff to meet patient care needs, including hiring, orientation, retention, and employee satisfaction.
  • Ensure new skill training and ongoing competency verification is completed annually, including mentorship and professional educational opportunities.
  • Evaluate staff competence through performance reviews and peer reviews.
  • Coordinate performance and compliance with patient safety initiatives and regulatory bodies such as Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, and other accrediting bodies.
  • Assist with achieving clinical program goals and implement action plans to improve performance as delegated.
  • Facilitate use of resources by nursing staff, including advanced practice roles.
  • Monitor and improve patient satisfaction using service metrics and national benchmarks.
  • Partner with physicians at the unit level to achieve clinical, operational, and service goals.
  • Support the nurse manager in overseeing and facilitating activities of student nurses.
  • Support staff participation in community outreach activities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.
  • Current nursing license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of practice.
  • Valid compact licenses transferred within 60 days of employment.
  • BLS certification for healthcare providers.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Completion of Intermountain’s leadership training and development courses within one year of accepting the position.
  • 2 years of clinical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in oversight functions.
Specialty Certification

Any specialty certification in nursing is valued and will be considered a plus.

Physical Requirements

Employees must see and read information, operate monitors, and perform routine patient care tasks. They must lift, transfer, and manage patient and equipment movement, including heavy items, and may stand for extended periods. Driving responsibilities, if applicable, require safe vehicle operation.

Location & Compensation

Intermountain Health Utah Valley Hospital, Provo, Utah. 40hours per week. Hourly rate ranges from $44.33 to $68.42, depending on experience.
