Summary/Objective: A Safety Specialist serves as the lead technical safety specialist for construction projects, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local health and safety regulations.
This position will report to the HWH Operations Director and may have duties and responsibilities across multiple groups within H.W. Houston.

A Safety Specialist is responsible for managing, evaluating, and monitoring the communication and compliance of H.W. Houston health and safety programs and related regulations. A Safety Specialist is responsible for assisting project teams with leading health and safety standards on small to medium sized projects.
- Perform site inspections and develop timely written safety assessments. Provide recommendations for corrective actions and confirm execution of changes, as appropriate.
- Plan, implement, coordinate, and assess construction incidents/risk and occupational safety and health programs on a site-specific level. Utilize knowledge of industry safety standards and operating regulations. Ensure regulatory compliance with federal and state OSHA and EPA requirements.
- Recommend procedures and approaches to safety and loss prevention based on reports of incidents, accidents, and other data gathered from construction personnel.
- Follow-up on execution of site specific planning.
- Identify key incident and/or safety trends. Share trends with project management and provide recommendations for loss reduction and mitigation. Schedule and conduct meeting with executives on data gathered quarterly.
- Train and coach project leaders on effective loss prevention techniques, incident investigation, hazard identification, inspection, and regulatory compliance.
- Review environmental reports when contaminates are identified. Verify the implementation and coordination of health and safety plans with consultants and contractors to satisfy governmental regulations.
- Assist the project team to lead the investigation of incidents or injuries; document the investigation by gathering photos, witness statements, evidence, etc.
- Assist with the care of employees as part of case management. Serve as the liaison between the medical provider and H.W. Houston to ensure the employee is receiving appropriate care.
- Serve on the project’s emergency response team, as needed; provide timely response and assistance to incidents.
- Partner with project team leadership to assess overall program needs and recommend appropriate courses of action.
- Assist with conducting site safety orientations, daily safety huddles, weekly toolbox training, and other required health and safety trainings.
- Assist with development of company communication such as safety alerts, toolbox talks, lessons learned, or other safety initiatives, as appropriate.
- Build relationships with project teams, subcontractors, and vendors to drive a collaborative safety culture.
