DEAN of Students

Morton Elementary School – Pueblo, Colorado – Pueblo School District 60.

Job Summary

The Dean of Students assists the principal in leading instructional and behavioral improvement initiatives, supports teachers, fosters a culture of high expectations, and maintains a safe, supportive school climate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Principal in providing instructional leadership to the school.
  • Assume the duties of the Principal in the Principal’s absence or per assignment.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of certified and/or classified personnel; assign duties; participate in site visits and observations; provide recommendations for improvement; assist with recruiting, interviewing, and selection of new staff.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at‑risk students.
  • Develop and administer student disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state law; resolve parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints.
  • Serve as a resource to staff for classroom management issues.
  • Supervise students on campus before and after school and during lunch, recess, and other activities; instruct students in appropriate behavior.
  • Monitor and organize attendance functions; communicate with parents regarding absent or tardy students; provide leadership for attendance improvement efforts.
  • Participate as needed in meetings regarding student growth and success (IEP and 504 case conferences, parent meetings, expulsion hearings, etc.).
  • Communicate daily with students, parents, and teachers regarding attendance and discipline matters.
  • Work with the principal to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students; develop and update plans for emergency situations.
  • Participate in administrative meetings and training to improve administrative skills; maintain current knowledge of the district’s adopted curriculum.
Non‑Essential Duties
  • Perform any and all other duties as assigned by Building Administrators.
Qualifications
  • Valid Colorado Teaching License within 60 days of hire.
  • Valid Colorado Principal License within 60 days of hire.
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Completed a fingerprint‑based criminal background check and cleared by the Office of Human Resources.
  • Proficient communication skills in English, orally and in writing, with proper grammar and vocabulary.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous administrative experience.
  • Experience in a Title I or low‑income setting.
  • Master’s degree in Education.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.
  • Knowledge of creating and implementing student behavior expectations.
  • Knowledge of conflict‑resolution strategies.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Strong commitment to system change and teamwork.
  • Reliability and punctuality in attendance.
  • Flexibility in work tasks and scheduling.
Benefits

Fringe benefits based on the Public Education Association negotiated agreement. Salary is set by the Teacher Salary Schedule.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

The role requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers, operating a computer, and communicating orally. It is an 8.5‑hour workday that may involve standing, walking, and repetitive use of arms and wrists. Most physical duties are performed frequently; a few are occasional.

Work is primarily conducted in a school/office environment with natural and fluorescent lighting. It is fast‑paced with frequent interruptions.
