Salary and Benefits

The range for this position is $92,508.00 - $ with an expected starting salary of $101,748 annually. CDOT offers an excellent benefits package.

Description Of Job

About the Position

This position is a fully-operational, licensed engineer responsible for the entire construction process of transportation projects, ensuring quality construction, supervising inspections, tests and documentation, interpreting plans and specifications, evaluating and directing changes in the field, and verifying that design and construction comply with contract plans and specifications to provide safe and adequate highway systems. The engineer will apply engineering theories, principles, and standards to the design and preparation of plans and specifications, act as the CDOT engineer of record and stamp plans in accordance with licensing regulations.

This may involve oversight of lower level engineering positions for conformance to agency policy and directives.

Major duties and responsibilities

include, but are not limited to:

  • Construction Engineering
  • Operate as the Chief Engineer’s authorized representative in charge of the work and ensure satisfactory completion of transportation projects under construction.
  • Apply professional engineering license to design specifications, and standards to construction projects (new construction or reconstruction of intersections, corridor widening, roadway signing, pavement markings, surface treatment, bridge improvements, etc.).
  • Certify contractor equipment, materials, workmanship, and products comply with contract plans and specifications through supervision, inspections, and documentation.
  • Complete ratings and reviews for project consultants and ensure consultant and contractor compliance with federally mandated programs and state requirements (EEO, AA, Davis-Bacon, OSHA, ADA, local ordinances, etc.).
  • Prepare accurate pay quantities, project activities, correspondence, conditions, and issues; complete various written and computer-generated reports.
  • Act as primary CDOT contact for project issues and questions.
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles to project locations to meet with project staff and oversee construction projects.
  • Design Engineering
  • Develop plan sets and specifications for roadway projects using current engineering principles, design standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and evaluate roadway construction plans using design software; require knowledge of design methods, regulations, and computer functions.
  • Request field surveys, environmental studies, traffic data, right-of-way information, hydrology/hydraulic design, structural design, utility locations/relocations, and other information as required.
  • Organize scoping meetings and coordinate with Materials, Environmental, Traffic, Bridge, Survey, Utility, ROW, local stakeholders, and other units to clear projects before advertisement.
  • Evaluate proposed designs and determine changes to improve serviceability, safety, maintenance, and affordability.
  • Prepare and review plans, layouts, configurations, quantities, acquisitions, clearances, and bid packages; ensure timely project advertisement within budgets.
