Overview
Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is seeking an Automation Engineer to join its Maintenance team at the Pueblo, Colorado plant. The role focuses on developing, designing, and implementing control systems to enhance production times, steel quality, equipment performance, energy consumption, and automation across the steel manufacturing process.
Responsibilities- Develop new industrial processes and design both new plant equipment and modifications to existing equipment in an industrial environment.
- Support rolling mills and steelmaking production and maintenance operations in a highly automated plant.
- Design, develop, and implement control systems (hardware and software) to improve production times, steel quality, equipment performance, energy consumption, downtime reduction, and process automation.
- Obtain a complete understanding of the company’s process control systems and their impact on the production line—from scrap melting through refining, liquid‑to‑solid transformation, to finished product.
- Make recommendations for development actions; analyze, modify, and improve programmable logic controllers (PLC) and human‑machine interfaces (HMI).
- Design and monitor performance indicators, creating necessary bridges between the control site and the company information systems.
- Provide ongoing maintenance support and resolve process control system problems, taking ownership of issues to completion.
- Write requirements specifications, and high‑level design and systems architecture specifications related to control of steel production processes.
- Project management responsibilities.
- Be available to be on call and assist personnel during emergencies and business needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Automated Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent technical education.
- 5+ years of relevant work experience in industrial control environments.
- Experience working with Allen‑Bradley PLC (or Fanuc, Modicon, Toolbox) and variable frequency drives (VFD).
- Strong computer skills in MS Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
- Proven teamwork, communication (oral and written), administrative and organizational skills.
- Proven problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Open & Closing Dates: 5/28/2026 – 7/1/2026.
- Base salary range: $100,000 – $140,000 annually.
