Engineering Intern Position at Xcel Energy

Work with the Engineering staff at Comache Generating Plant to support the plant operations and to help troubleshoot equipment issues. Work as an entry level engineering intern to test and analyze plant equipment. Provide a report at the end of the summer detailing the information gathered.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Perform equipment monitoring, field observations, predictive testing, data analytics and application of engineering fundamentals to prevent and identify equipment failures.
- Be the facilitator for failure analytics including Root Cause Analysis, High-Bar Failure Elimination, and Event Sharing & Learning with peer generating stations.
- Support the implementation of site-specific Maintenance Strategies by partnering with Plant Operations to identify maintenance opportunities that present the highest business value.
- Understand equipment performance parameters to monitor, identify, assess, and communicate operational risks to Plant Operations including recommended corrective actions.
- Facilitate the site-specific long-term asset planning for the in-service equipment.
- Review and comment on improvement projects during the scoping, design, construction, and commissioning stages to optimize life-cycle costs and design for reliability.
This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energy's business needs.
Minimum Requirements:
- Current student, Sophomore or higher (as of Fall 2027)
- Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Chemistry
- Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Non-Bargaining The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.20 to $23.10 per hour
