CDA – State Fair Custodian (Custodian I) – State of Colorado
Job SummaryThis position is part of the Event Services unit at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. The custodian prepares buildings and event areas, ensures all areas are clean, and assists with setting up for events including the annual Colorado State Fair. Duties include janitorial responsibilities, groundskeeping tasks, and event fulfillment.
Responsibilities- Custodial Services:
- Clean buildings and grounds before and after special events and rentals.
- Maintain cleanliness of all restroom facilities, including deep cleaning, disinfecting, and restocking supplies.
- Perform deep cleaning of buildings and offices, including floors, walls, light fixtures, vents, windows, and drinking fountains.
- Clean exteriors of buildings, entrances, and entry mats.
- Respond to emergency cleaning needs (e.g., animal or human waste).
- Use and store cleaning chemicals and equipment properly.
- Stock and inventory janitorial supplies and coordinate orders with the Event Services Manager.
- Operate specialized cleaning equipment (floor scrubbers, bathroom machines, floor buffers, carpet shampooers, power washers).
- Maintain custodial storage areas and report hazards.
- Assist the Event Services Manager with restroom assessments.
- Groundskeeping:
- Maintain cleanliness on all State Fair property and perform snow removal, flower bed preparation, watering, weeding, leaf removal, trimming, and gutter cleaning.
- Conduct general maintenance such as changing light bulbs, painting, and minor repairs.
- Secure offices, buildings, and gates as needed.
- Monitor grounds conditions and report repair needs to the Event Services Manager.
- Operate machinery and vehicles including fleet truck, golf cart, scissor lift, forklift, blower, and chainsaw.
- Event Fulfillment:
- Prepare buildings and grounds for non‑fair rentals and the annual Colorado State Fair.
- Ensure cleanliness prior to, during, and after events.
- Provide renters with access to buildings and rented areas.
- Assist with set‑up of tables, chairs, dance floors, basketball floors, stages, animal pens, arena panels, sound systems, tents, barricades, and gates.
- Serve as point of contact or work lead for temporary event staff and inmate work crews, explaining duties and ensuring compliance.
- Clear all equipment and debris after events, transport equipment to storage, and thoroughly clean event areas, including restrooms and exterior spaces.
- Conduct post‑event walk‑throughs to assess cleanliness and identify any damages.
- Six (6) months of relevant experience in custodian or janitorial roles (part‑time experience prorated).
- Combination of related education and/or experience equaling six months.
- Must be a Colorado resident at the time of application.
- Active Colorado driver’s license required.
- Experience in a regulatory role (e.g., working with rules and regulations).
- Relevant experience working for the State of Colorado.
Hourly: $19.16 – $22.99
Conditions of Employment- In‑person position located at the Colorado State Fairgrounds; remote work not available.
- Must be willing to work outside normal business hours and in adverse weather conditions.
- Must be able to exert up to 100 lbs occasionally and 50 lbs frequently, with up to 20 lbs constantly.
- Work effectively in a fast‑paced environment, juggling multiple priorities and responding to changing conditions.
- Detail oriented and proactive with strong decision‑making capability.
- Team‑player who can also work independently; excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills.
