CMHHIP – Registered Nurse II
Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) is a 24‑hour behavioral health acute care facility serving patients with psychiatric and medical needs. The facility offers evaluation and treatment for individuals who are severely mentally ill and aims to return patients to optimal functioning and community reintegration.
Unit: ABTU (Adolescent Behavioral Trauma Unit) – treats adolescents ages 12‑17 with psychiatric disorders, concurrent criminal involvement, or high danger. The unit is medium‑acuity, high‑security and located in the Hawkins wing.
Position Summary – The Nurse II works under the Lead Nurse/Nurse III, providing clinical direction, supervision, and quality assurance for nursing staff.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clinical supervision to all nursing staff on the assigned unit.
- Coordinate staffing schedules based on acuity and pool resources to ensure quality care.
- Communicate staffing needs and changes promptly to the Lead Nurse.
- Implement nursing policies at the unit level and ensure compliance with CMHHIP policies and regulatory standards.
- Organize and facilitate nursing staff coaching, continuing education, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Maintain unit nursing standards, ensuring adherence to CDHS Code of Conduct and CMHHIP Ethics.
- Oversee nursing care delivery, including documentation of restraints, respiratory services, oxygen equipment, and laboratory services.
- Ensure safe, secure, and therapeutic environment through timely response to psychiatric or medical issues.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team leaders and department management to disseminate nursing directives.
- Participate in Trauma‑Informed Care initiatives and maintain infection control standards.
- Conduct patient education on medications, physical care, and psychiatric care during group or individual therapy.
- Perform any other duties related to the shift or unit as required.
- Provide direction and supervision of nursing staff, ensuring policies are understood and followed.
- Identify and communicate personnel needs promptly.
- Assist with the preparation for onsite surveys and documentation requirements.
- Communicate changes to policies and procedures via Cornerstone Rosters, meetings, email and individual contact.
- Maintain current knowledge of new nursing policies, standards, and literature.
- Collaborate with all departments and provide assistance when needed.
- Ensure unit staffing levels are appropriate and accurate.
- Mentor and train nursing personnel, providing immediate feedback and guidance.
- Maintain performance plans and document competencies of assigned staff.
- Administer in‑service training and ensure fluency with electronic systems (BEHR, Cornerstone).
- Support compliance with mandatory hospital training.
- Current, valid RN license from the Colorado Board of Nursing or an E‑NLC state.
- At least 2 years of professional experience in a related occupational field.
- Appropriate education may substitute for up to 2 years of required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Proficiency in nursing process and ability to deliver patient‑centered interventions.
- Experience directing shift operations through training, mentorship and development.
- Strong work ethic founded on self‑motivation, loyalty, honesty and integrity.
- Dependable, responsible and adaptable with previous state experience.
- Background check encompassing CBI & FBI fingerprint, Colorado Court Database, Medicare Fraud Database, and TRAILS.
- Includes CAPS check for vulnerable adult care.
- Work various shifts; must report promptly for essential or emergency services.
- 2‑step TB screening required upon hire.
- Positions are paid biweekly.
- Pass all modules of CMHHIP New Employee Orientation, including defensive tactics and CPR/CTI.
- Physical requirements:
lift arms above head, kick to waist, maintain physical agility, and ability to handle restraints. - Ability to read and comprehend English and communicate effectively in writing and orally.
