Overview

Grounds Maintenance Technician for the Division of Facilities Management – Southern District. The position supports the upkeep of Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo, Pueblo Regional Center, Division of Youth Services, and Veteran’s Community Living Centers. Duties include irrigation system maintenance, lawn, shrub, flower, and tree care, road and asphalt upkeep, and assistance to other departments with demolition, underground services, and construction support.

Responsibilities
  • Apply horticultural and landscaping skills to trees, shrubs, and lawns, including herbicide and pesticide application per state and federal regulations.
  • Trim and shape shrubs using electric trimmers.
  • Maintain lawn health through irrigation, aeration, fertilization, and preservation; monitor and service Maxicom irrigation systems.
  • Operate lawn mowers, tractors, dump trucks, snow plows, trenchers, and other state vehicles.
  • Ensure safety by removing ice, snow, debris, and sand from parking lots, walkways, and entrances.
  • Identify, monitor, and repair slip, trip, and fall hazards on sidewalks, pathways, and building entrances.
  • Repair roads and streets using appropriate tools and materials in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Assist in design and execution of landscaping projects, including cost estimating and project management.
  • Support other departments (electricity, plumbing, construction) by clearing debris, excavating ditches, and aiding in line installations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, such as water main repairs.
Equipment and Vehicle
  • Operate machinery such as jackhammers, lawnmowers, skid‑steer loaders, tampers, electrical, gas, and hand tools with proper safety procedures.
  • Operate equipment that requires a CDL, such as dump trucks with air brakes.
  • Report maintenance issues or malfunctions to the supervisor promptly.
Call Back & Shift Work

This is a full‑time essential position with required after‑hours call backs. The employee must be available for shift work and emergencies (e.g., snow removal) and will receive a minimum of two (2) hours of base pay for call back time.

Minimum Qualifications
  • One (1) year of large‑scale landscaping and grounds maintenance experience (parks, golf courses, schools, or campuses).
  • Valid, non‑restricted Colorado driver’s license.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, squat, kneel, and perform repetitive tasks; successful completion of a physical exam, lift, and range of motion test.
  • Successful completion of a full background check; willingness to obtain an annual influenza vaccination and pass a tuberculosis (TB) test.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience installing and maintaining irrigation systems.
  • Experience designing and maintaining large landscaping projects.
Conditions of Employment
  • All job offers are contingent on a successful physical exam and background check.
  • Must maintain Colorado state residency throughout employment.
  • Must be willing to travel between sites, receive an annual influenza vaccination or provide an exemption, and pass a TB test.
  • Must comply with hazardous material handling procedures and weather exposure requirements.
