The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) is seeking temporary Correctional Officers (Levels I, II, III, or group assignments) in Pueblo to support state‑wide prison operations. These positions may be located at multiple sites within the Pueblo area and may require work across all shifts.
Job Responsibilities- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility.
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
- Man an armed post (requires annual firearms certification).
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles.
- Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms.
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule.
- Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles.
- Monitor visiting areas.
- Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts.
- Cross‑check and maintain movement logs.
- Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle).
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards.
- Inspect inmate mail and property.
- Respond to emergency situations (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using proper protocols.
- Follow tool and key control, ensuring proper storage and documentation.
- Attend roll call.
- Document incidents using established reporting practices.
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
- Work additional hours and/or shifts as required for 24/7 facility operations.
- High School Diploma or GED certificate.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Legally eligible to work in the United States.
- Valid and unrestricted Colorado driver’s license.
- Successful completion of a background investigation.
- Pass all modules of CDOC Basic Training (reading, competency assessments, defensive tactics).
- Physical ability to complete defensive tactics (e.g., lift, take down, move, swing baton, withstand impact, etc.).
- Exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum during training and assignment.
- Willingness and ability to work all shifts, including doubles, weekends, holidays, inclement weather, and roving assignments.
- TB screening upon hire.
- Willingness to apply the CDOC Drug Deterrence Program and use physical force as trained.
- Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity, and dependability.
- Sound judgment, reasoning, and decision‑making skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer‑service skills.
- Ability to read and comprehend English; effective verbal and written communication.
- Observational skills for monitoring inmate activity and maintaining accurate counts.
- Knowledge of criminal‑justice systems, relevant statutes, ADA, PREA, and CDOC policies.
- Intermediate computer keyboarding and email communication skills.
- Ability to perform searches (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, vehicle).
- Ability to operate mechanical doors, security devices, communication equipment, and firearms safely.
- Ability to respond swiftly to emergencies and maintain composure under stress.
- Physical endurance to climb stairs and navigate hard surfaces throughout shifts.
- Willingness to adhere to CDA's safety protocols and chain of command.
- Emotional stability, resilience, and tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction.
- Bilingual proficiency.
- Experience in mentoring or volunteer work.

- Temporary assignment; no more than nine (9) months in any rolling 12‑month period.
- Work schedule includes all shifts, doubles, weekends, and holidays.
- Continuous operation requirement until completion of Basic Training.
