Position: PIPE/MECHANICAL TRADES II HVAC.

Colorado State University Pueblo’s Facilities Department maintains campus facilities and support systems, ensuring they are safe, sanitary, and in compliance with all applicable regulatory standards.

Position Overview

Pipe/Mechanical Trades II – HVAC. This role maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, installs, and evaluates campus HVAC, refrigeration, mechanical, and building automation systems. It supports related facilities maintenance functions and coordinates with other trades and campus snow and inclement weather operations.

Duties
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install all HVAC equipment in campus buildings in compliance with manufacturer recommendations, local codes, Health Department, and ASHRAE standards.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install refrigeration equipment in campus buildings in compliance with manufacturer recommendations, local codes, Health Department, and ASHRAE standards, including refrigerant handling, recovery, and charging in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Specify and evaluate commercial air conditioning and refrigeration equipment (cooling towers, chillers, air handlers, RTUs, heat pumps, mini‑split systems, VFDs, VAVs, ductwork, and related equipment). Perform load calculations, material estimates, and order parts required for installation, ensuring equipment meets all regulatory requirements and infrastructure support.
  • Use building automation systems to monitor, install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair controls, ensuring proper operation of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Identify out‑of‑tolerance conditions using BAS trend data.
  • Utilize knowledge of pumps and valves to conduct maintenance and repair of various pumps and control valves, including electrical, pneumatic, piping, cooling towers, absorption chillers, water‑cooled chillers, and direct expansion units.
  • Assist other facilities staff and trades as needed; perform snow removal functions using vehicle equipment such as snow plows, snow blowers, shovels, and UTVs with plows.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Journeyman’s License (HVAC)
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience in a related occupation.
  • OR a combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience equivalent to three (3) years.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance programs, CMMS platforms (e.g., TMA), and documentation best practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of refrigeration systems, including recovery, evacuation, charging, and leak detection in compliance with EPA and ASHRAE standards.
  • Experience evaluating system performance using BAS trend data, instrumentation, and diagnostic tooling.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, sequence of operations, and equipment submittals.
