Position: Heavy Equipment Mechanic III and/or IV

POSITION SUMMARY

Heavy Equipment Mechanic III
Budgeted starting salary: $32.14 per hour. Grade 8: $25.71 – $38.56 per hour.
Under limited supervision, performs a variety of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light‑duty, medium‑duty, heavy trailer, truck, and road maintenance equipment.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV
Budgeted starting salary: $35.35 per hour. Grade 9: $28.28 – $42.41 per hour.
Under limited supervision, leads duties over Heavy Equipment Mechanic staff in the Fleet Department; may fill in for supervisor in their absence. Performs the same maintenance and repair duties as Level III.

WHAT YOU WILL DO Heavy Equipment Mechanic III
  • Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs and general maintenance on gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines and major drivetrain components (transmissions, differentials, drive units).
  • Performs diagnostics, major and minor repairs on emissions, cooling, fuel, electrical, air conditioning, air, and hydraulic systems.
  • Conducts safety repairs to comply with DOT regulations including air and hydraulic brake systems; repairs and adjusts lights, aligns front and rear ends, balances tires, adjusts drive lines, and repairs damaged vehicle bodies.
  • Maintains records of all work performed using a computerized fleet management system.
  • Completes all necessary paperwork related to job assignments and time cards.
  • Performs general in‑shop repairs of minor system failures (lights, brakes, brake adjustments, air system leaks, two‑way radio installations, cooling, and fuel problems).
  • Makes emergency road calls, which may require wrecker service or special transportation.
  • Rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, single and twin‑screw rear axles, and compressor systems.
  • Performs engineering, layout, fabrication, and installation of new equipment or repairs and redesign of existing equipment.
  • Cleans and organizes shop and equipment, changes solvents, and disposes of trash and waste as required.
  • Maintains work area, tools and equipment in a clean and safe condition; reports unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.
  • Answers phone and radio calls.
  • Orders and picks up parts.
  • Provides instruction on equipment operation.
  • Makes welding repairs.
  • Performs on‑site service and emergency calls.

WHAT YOU HAVE Heavy Equipment Mechanic III EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency preferred.
