Heavy Equipment Mechanic III

Join CDOT's maintenance team and help keep Colorado's highways safe and moving. As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic III, you'll inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair the light and heavy trucks and specialized equipment used to maintain Colorado's highway system. You'll work on a diverse fleet, including snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving equipment, and other specialized maintenance vehicles, helping ensure equipment is safe, reliable, and ready when crews need it.

Our heavy equipment mechanics are responsible for ensuring the readiness and operational safety of the equipment 24 hours/7 days a week in all weather conditions.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Visually inspect vehicles and equipment for defects, leaks, and other mechanical problems.
  • Use scan tools, diagnostic computers, error codes, and other test equipment to identify equipment problems and malfunctions.
  • Diagnose and repair electronically controlled equipment, including engines, brakes, transmissions, hydraulic controls, sanders, liquid de-icing systems, and other components.
  • Gather information from equipment operators and test drive or operate equipment to help identify and diagnose problems.
  • Repair, replace, and rebuild components of brake, cooling, drivetrain, electrical, hydraulic, air, steering, suspension, engine, fuel, exhaust, and emission systems.
  • Repair and maintain computer-controlled sanders, liquid de-icing equipment, and AVL systems.
  • Safely drive and operate equipment such as tandem trucks, loaders, backhoes, motor graders, and sweepers.
  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections and ensure equipment is maintained in safe operating condition.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including checking and servicing fluids, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, filters, oil, and other vehicle and equipment components.
  • Complete annual DOT safety inspections and certify vehicles for compliance with applicable Federal DOT requirements.
  • Order parts, supplies, and materials needed for equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Create and maintain accurate SAP work orders and records documenting repairs, maintenance, inspections, parts, materials, and labor.
  • Follow required safety procedures, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Participate in required training and stay current on equipment, technology, tools, repair procedures, and applicable policies and standards.
  • Fabricate, modify, and install equipment, mounting brackets, specialized parts, and tools using welding, machining, cutting, and other fabrication equipment.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin
  • Exposure to electrical shock
  • Required to lift up to 70 lbs.
  • Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of vehicles
  • Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Required to work with chemicals and cleaning products
  • Some equipment requires the use of respirators
  • Work near traffic, sometimes high-speed traffic
  • Use ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10'–20'
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles
  • Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties
  • Required to use cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls
  • Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods of time
  • Required to report without delay to provide essential emergency services to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the traveling public
