Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Heavy Equipment Mechanic I: budgeted starting salary $24.14 hourly (Grade 5 $ 19.31 - $28.96 Hourly). Under direct supervision, assists in performing a variety of unskilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light duty, medium duty, heavy trailer, truck and road maintenance equipment. Heavy Equipment Mechanic II: budgeted starting salary $29.22 Hourly (Grade 7 $ 23.37 - $35.06 Hourly). Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light duty, medium duty, heavy trailer, truck and road maintenance equipment.

What You Will Do

Heavy Equipment Mechanic I:

  • Assists in performing diagnostics, minor repairs, and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline, and diesel engines, and major drive train components transmissions, differentials, and drive units, under direct supervision.
  • Assists in performs diagnostics, minor repairs on emissions systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical circuits, air conditioning systems, air systems, and hydraulic systems, under direct supervision.
  • Assists in performing safety repairs to comply with DOT regulations including air and hydraulic brake systems, repairs and adjusts lights, aligns front and rear ends; balances tires, adjusts drive lines and repairs damaged vehicle bodies.
  • Maintains necessary records of all work performed using computerized fleet management system.
  • Completes all necessary paperwork related to job assignments and time cards.
  • Assists in performing general in shop repairs of minor system failures including lights, brakes, brake adjustments, air system leaks, two-way radio system installations, cooling system problems and fuel system problems.
  • Assists in emergency road calls, which may require wrecker service or special transportation; assists in on-site services
  • Assists in rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, single and twin screw rear axles and compressor systems.
  • Assists in performing engineering, layout, fabrication and installation of new equipment or repairs and redesign on existing equipment.
  • Cleans and organizes shop and equipment, changes solvents and disposes of trash and waste as required.
  • Maintains work area, tools and equipment in a clean and safe condition; responsible for reporting unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.
  • Orders and picks up parts.
  • Assists in welding repairs.

    What You Have

    Heavy Equipment Mechanic I:

    • High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred.
    • Current enrollment in a vocational school or training preferred.
    • Minimum of one (1) year of experience performing mechanical repairs on all heavy-duty vehicles and equipment preferred.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Commercial B Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement within 120 days of hire required.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Forklift operator certification within 120 days of hire required.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck within two (2) years of hire in one (1) or more of the following required:
