Overview
New River Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under a state-wide system of 23 community colleges. The college is located on a one-hundred plus acre site at the intersection of U.S. Routes 11 and 100 in Dublin, Virginia with an instructional site in Christiansburg. The campus provides modern, well-equipped facilities for the career technical education programs as well as for the college transfer programs.
Approximately 4,000 students comprise the student body.
- Participate as a member of a teaching team, working collaboratively with other full- and part-time faculty to deliver high quality instruction.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate emergency medical services curriculum.
- Teach emergency medical services courses in classroom, lab, and clinical settings using innovative methods, techniques, and delivery methods that include active learning, instructional technology, and online learning.
- Write and revise course plans.
- Maintain a classroom and lab with the appropriate equipment and supplies.
- Collaborate with the dean of health professions and clinical coordination specialist to establish/maintain clinical partnerships and relationships with local healthcare organizations.
- Collaborate with the dean of health professions to recruit qualified students and faculty for nursing programs including mentoring adjunct faculty.
- Collect, analyze, and use data from assessment of courses and student learning outcomes to evaluate program effectiveness.
- Recommend curricular changes based on student learning outcomes.
- Maintain an environment conducive to learning.
- Develop and implement student retention and success initiatives.
- Advise students in a proactive manner to assist in retention and program completion.
- Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and external constituents.
- Demonstrate ethical standards of practice as articulated by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services.
- Serve on department and other college committees and participate in college initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Required Qualifications- Current unrestricted EMT license in Virginia.
- Certification as an Educational Consultant by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services.
- A minimum of an associate degree in Emergency Medical Services from an accredited college or university.
- At least two years’ experience as an EMT with recent field experience.
- Knowledge of current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Educations Standards, and evidence-informed practice.
- Commitment to community college mission and to emergency medical education.
- Excellent oral and written communication and effective communication in teaching/learning situations.
- Commitment to and ability to implement teaching strategies that foster student retention and student success.
- Ability to serve effectively as a team member and maintain effective and courteous working relationships.
- Fairness and flexibility in understanding and working with various students.
- Knowledge of emerging trends in emergency medical scenarios.
- Willingness to obtain and maintain screening and immunizations required for field participation.
Finalists will be required to present a sample teaching lesson.
Additional Considerations- Bachelor’s degree in emergency medical services or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Experience in community college or other higher education nursing education.
- Knowledge of assessment of student learning and program effectiveness.
- Experience working in an CAAHEP /CoAEMSP accredited emergency medical services program.
- Evidence of continuous professional development in emergency medical services.
