Position Overview

The Assistant Director of Horticulture Teaching Facilities will serve under the Horticulture Department Chair (or Director) and manage three hands‑on teaching facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee day‑to‑day operations, strategic planning, and budget management of the Horticulture Center, Teaching Greenhouses, and Display Garden.
  • Maintain and repair greenhouses, orchards, nurseries, and gardens.
  • Coordinate research, extension, student clubs, public events, and instructional activities to align with university objectives.
  • Make independent operational decisions, ensure safety compliance, and support faculty and student engagement.
  • Provide formal teaching, lectures, and laboratories aligned with horticulture programs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, plant sciences, agriculture, ecology, natural resources, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in greenhouse, facility, program, or farm management, including at least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make operational decisions affecting student learning outcomes.
  • Washington Public Operator Pesticide License or ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in horticulture, agricultural education, plant sciences, ecology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in a collaborative setting with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in a university or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse climate control systems, orchard, nursery production, and sustainable farm management.
  • Experience engaging students in hands‑on environments and supporting academic instruction.
  • Familiarity with student development and experiential learning theory.
  • Experience coordinating outreach, research trials, and community engagement programs.

Compensation

Salary: $4,942.10 – $7,569.55 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
