Role Description The Adjunct Instructor of Chinese Language will teach undergraduate Chinese language courses in a face-to-face classroom setting at the Purcellville, VA campus in a full-time, on-site capacity. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering engaging lessons that develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Chinese, as well as designing syllabi, assignments, assessments, and learning activities that align with PHC’s classical liberal arts and Christian mission.
The instructor will hold regular office hours, provide timely and constructive feedback, support student learning through mentoring and advising, and maintain accurate records of grades and attendance. Additional duties may include collaborating with department colleagues on curriculum development, integrating cultural and historical context into language instruction, and participating in relevant campus meetings or events as needed.
Qualifications
- Advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, with strong skills in speaking, reading, writing, and listening.
- Experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at the college or secondary level, with demonstrated classroom management and instructional skills.
- Knowledge of second-language acquisition, curriculum design, and assessment methods suitable for undergraduate learners.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor and support a diverse student body.
- Master’s degree or higher in Chinese Language, Chinese Studies, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Education, or a closely related field (doctoral degree preferred).
- Commitment to Patrick Henry College’s Christian mission and the integration of faith and learning within a classical liberal arts framework.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff, contribute to departmental goals, and engage in professional development.
- Familiarity with instructional technologies and learning management systems used in higher education is beneficial.
