This position is for the 2025-26 School Year

GROUP: Substitute

SALARY: Substitute Salary Schedule

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

WORKDAYS PER FISCAL YEAR: On-call

SUMMARY: The Substitute School Bus Driver is responsible for providing bus transportation service to Chief Leschi students in a safe and timely manner.

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in Washington and one of about 200 tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Transports students and other authorized persons safely to and from school, and on field, extracurricular, special and/or activity trips as authorized by immediate supervisor.
  • Operates school buses under all types of weather conditions.
  • Services, inspects and cleans school buses and equipment according to state, federal, and school policies.
  • Maintains control of student passenger safety.
  • Reports unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of any person other than the driver.
  • Completes forms, records and reports as required by law and school policies.
  • Maintains coursework and a driver’s training program as set forth by the State Superintendent and the school.
  • Operates school bus in accordance with Washington state laws and policies.
  • Operates and services all school bus equipment and accessories.
  • Performs basic first‑aid, including CPR, when appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Excellent driving abstract
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License with CDL (Class B), P‑1 and S endorsements
  • Documented experience in a school setting
  • Ability to obtain First Aid certification in a timely manner
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be bondable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Eight hours of a defensive driving course
  • Valid CPR card

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to sit for long periods; reach, stand, walk, bend, twist, squat, kneel; and use hands to handle, feel, and manipulate. The employee must regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
