Job Description SUMMARYThe Para educator - Instructional Support (1 Year only) position assists the classroom teacher in daily instruction, covering areas such as general content, remediation, intervention, enrichment, and extension activities. Responsibilities vary by assignment but generally include tutoring students, supporting student discipline, preparing materials, proctoring tests, and assisting with record-keeping.
ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLSFormerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Tutors students individually or in a small group setting as directed by the classroom teacher
- Communicates student needs to teacher and other school staff
- Maintains and/or assists with student discipline including maintenance of positive student behavior
- Assists with the supervision of students during building activities, such as assemblies and special programs
- Assists students with building emergency drills
- May attend staff meetings and building events, such as open house
- May attend related professional development activities and workshops
- Maintains effective communication with classroom teachers and administrators
- Maintains professional conduct when working with students, staff and parents
- Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
- Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSBe at least eighteen years of age
Possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED) and
Two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter hours); or an Associate’s degree (or higher); or a passing score (461) on a state local Para assessment exam.
Proof of qualifications must be included in application for consideration.
Knowledge of traditional Native American cultures and values
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field
Recent previous para educator experience

Use basic job-related equipment
Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures
Building Principal or designee
PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand for long periods of time. The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms and is regularly required to talk or hear; stand and/or walk; bend, stoop, twist, squat, and kneel; and use hands to finger, handle, feel and perform fine motor manipulation. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors, occasionally near visual displays. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
