SUMMARY: The Family & Consumer Sciences (CTE) Teacher develops and leads an innovative Career and Technical Education program that prepares students with the knowledge, technical skills, leadership abilities, and real‑world experiences necessary for success in college, careers, family life, and their communities. Through engaging, hands‑on instruction, the teacher helps students explore topics such as human development, child development, family studies, interpersonal relationships, nutrition and wellness, financial literacy, life management, consumer education, and career pathways.
The Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher creates authentic learning experiences that connect classroom instruction to real‑world applications through project‑based learning, leadership development, community partnerships, career exploration, and work‑based learning opportunities. The teacher fosters a supportive and culturally responsive learning environment where students develop confidence, critical thinking, problem‑solving skills, and a strong sense of personal and community responsibility.

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Develop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive Family & Consumer Sciences CTE program aligned with Washington State CTE standards, graduation requirements, and industry‑relevant practices.
- Design and deliver engaging, hands‑on, project‑based learning experiences that connect academic content to practical life, career, and community applications.
- Teach courses that may include child development, human development, family studies, financial literacy, nutrition and wellness, consumer education, interpersonal relationships, career exploration, leadership development, and related Family & Consumer Sciences topics.
- Create learning experiences that promote critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, leadership, and career readiness skills.
- Establish a positive, inclusive, culturally responsive classroom environment that supports student engagement, achievement, and personal growth.
- Integrate Indigenous perspectives, tribal values, community resources, and culturally sustaining practices into instruction whenever appropriate.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with families, community organizations, tribal programs, colleges, businesses, and industry professionals to expand student learning opportunities.
- Coordinate and support career‑connected learning opportunities including guest speakers, field experiences, service‑learning projects, internships, job shadows, work‑based learning activities, and community partnerships.
- Promote and support student participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), leadership activities, competitions, and career exploration events.
- Assess student learning using a variety of formative and summative measures and use data to inform instructional decisions.
- Maintain accurate student records, grades, competency documentation, and CTE program records in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.
