Para educator-Instructional Support
The Para educator-Instructional Support position supports the classroom teacher in daily classroom instruction of students, including such areas as; general content, remediation, intervention, enrichment, and extension activities. Responsibilities vary with the individual assignment, but typically include tutoring students, supporting student discipline, preparing materials, providing testing proctoring/assistance, and assisting the teacher with record keeping.
About Chief Leschi Schools:
Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
- Tutors students individually or in a small group setting as directed by the classroom teacher
- Communicates student needs to teacher and other school staff
- Maintains and/or assists with student discipline including maintenance of positive student behavior
- Assists with the supervision of students during building activities, including, but not limited to, assemblies, special programs, recess, and hallway supervision
- Assists students with building emergency drills
- May attend staff meetings and building events, such as open house
- May attend related professional development activities and workshops
- Maintains effective communication with classroom teachers and administrators
- Maintains professional conduct when working with students, staff and parents
- Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
- Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements- Be at least eighteen years of age
- Possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED) and Two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter hours); or an Associate's degree (or higher); or a passing score (461) on a state local Para assessment exam.
- Proof of qualifications must be included in application for consideration.
- Knowledge of traditional Native American cultures and values
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field
- Recent previous para-educator experience
- Successful criminal background clearance
- Successful and/or clear drug screening
- Basic instructional methods and strategies to support student learning under teacher direction
- Classroom management techniques and positive behavior support practices
- Child development and age-appropriate student needs
- Small group and one-on-one tutoring techniques
- Procedures for supervising students in classroom and school settings
- Testing and assessment support practices, including proctoring and accommodations
- Basic recordkeeping and documentation related to student progress
- Effective communication methods when working with students, staff, and families
- Cultural competency, including knowledge of and respect for Native American cultures and values
- Student confidentiality requirements and FERPA guidelines
- Use of classroom materials, instructional tools, and basic educational technology
- School policies, procedures, and safety practices
- Work with and relate to Native American children and serve as a positive role model
- Take initiative and work independently
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing at all levels
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups in a multicultural and diverse community
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of confidentiality and the ability to maintain it
- Remain flexible to changes in assignments or situation.
- Organize activities, collect data, set priorities, and follow instructions
- Work collaboratively with school staff, parents, and community members
- Demonstrate understanding of and experience with cultural competence.
- Use basic job-related equipment
- Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures
