The City of Puyallup is accepting applications for its Public Works Supervisor II position overseeing the Water Division. Applicants are encouraged to apply by June 26th for priority consideration.

Responsibilities
  • Position designated to serve as the Waterworks Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) and is responsible for ensuring compliance with Chapter 246-292 WAC and all applicable state drinking water regulations.
  • Direct and oversee operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of the municipal water distribution system.
  • Ensure compliance with Washington State Department of Health drinking water requirements.
  • Assists in planning new maintenance programs with the Public Works Director and/or City Engineer.
  • Plans preventative maintenance programs, sets daily priorities.
  • Schedules, assigns, coordinates and inspects the activities of operations or maintenance personnel.
  • Trains employees, evaluates the performance of personnel and recommends corrective action.
  • Participates in the personnel processes and enforces provisions of labor contracts.
  • Assigns personnel and equipment to projects, transfers personnel and equipment between projects to meet operational priorities.
  • Inspects work on projects to ensure conformance to standards.
  • Prepares records and reports on work progress.
  • Performs laboratory tests in the Wastewater Treatment Plants to determine plant efficiency.
  • Contacts individual citizens having problems associated with the area of responsibility, attempts to resolve problems and maintain good public relations.
  • Requisition s materials, supplies and the use of equipment.
  • Ensures the proper and safe operation of equipment.
Knowledge of
  • Materials, methods, procedures and techniques commonly used in the operation of equipment or maintenance and repair tasks related to the section assigned.
  • Hazards and required safety precautions of the work.
  • Modern supervisory principles and practices.
  • Washington State drinking water regulations and waterworks operator certification requirements.
  • Water distribution system operations, maintenance, water quality, and regulatory compliance.
Ability to
  • Assign, schedule, direct, coordinate and evaluate the work of various skill level workers performing various operational and maintenance activities and to obtain results according to standards and schedules.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications.
  • Understand and execute written and oral instructions.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare operational or maintenance reports.
  • Gauge project progress and make adjustments to meet deadlines.
  • Maintain required operator certifications and ensure certified staffing coverage.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, manager, other City personnel, and the public.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Safely drive vehicles in the performance of job duties.
  • Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
Education and Experience

Three years of progressively responsible experience of a supervisory nature in either Street, Water, Building and Grounds, or Wastewater systems operations and maintenance; course work or training in modern supervisory principles and practice or Public Works supervision may be substituted for up to one year of the experience requirement. Or, a combination of education, experience, and training that indicates the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position listed above.

Qualifications
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid certificate as required by the particular position, state law and department regulations, which for this position includes:
  • Possession of a Washington State Water Distribution Manager 3 (WDM
    3) at time of Application.
  • Must possess within 12 months of hire and maintain throughout employment:
    • Waterworks Water Distribution Manager 4 (WDM
      4)
    • Washington State Water Treatment Plant Operator 1
  • Must have within six months of hire and maintain throughout employment Cross-connection Control Specialist (CCS).
