Job Overview
Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Puyallup, Washington is looking for a Numerical Controlled Skin Mill Operator A to join our Fabrication team. In this dynamic role you will set up, operate, and monitor CNC and manual skin‑milling machines to produce precision aircraft components. You’ll read and interpret work orders, drawings, and CNC programs; install fixtures and tooling; secure and position parts using vacuum systems and lifting devices;
and verify dimensional accuracy using precision measuring instruments. You’ll be responsible for safe machine operation, troubleshooting and correcting issues during runs, coordinating assistant personnel, handling hazardous materials, and maintaining required certifications.
Review work orders, drawings, operator/setup documents, tie‑in sheets, and tooling to prepare for job setup or to run a previously set‑up job. Ensure correct work order, drawings, programs, parts, and materials are at the machine before running media. Use and interpret charts, orders, blueprints, tooling, and layouts to plan and perform operations. Set up machines by installing fixtures, vacuum seal rubber, opening vacuum ports in the correct configuration, installing/removing NCMIT per documents, and locating parts using index pins, end stops, or reference lines.
Position, locate, and secure work pieces in work‑holding devices (vacuum chucks, project plates, etc.) and operate machines to groove, taper, surface, or form work‑holding surfaces. Operate and set machine controls to cycle, recycle, start/stop operations, synchronize tape/cutting tools, and manually operate machines as required. Retrieve and download CNC programs to machine controllers from servers/databases and run CNC programs to rough and finish parts per CNC documents.
Select, check, load, and unload cutting tools per program/CNC documents; set cutter offsets and tool heights using gauge blocks and controller/pendant inputs. Set machine coordinates/index points, cutter offset/compensations, and monitor controller displays or digital readouts during operation. Use precision measuring instruments (digital micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, CL5) and visually inspect work for conformance to specifications after each operation. Observe machine operations for unusual vibration/sounds, monitor gauges and chip formation, and make adjustments or take action to protect materials and equipment when malfunctions occur.
Coordinate and direct lower‑graded employees in setup, operation, adjustment, loading/unloading, and cleaning of machines and areas. Fabricate required setups, fixtures, and shop aids; identify and build needed shop aids and temporary fixtures. Operate material‑handling equipment (electric stackers, overhead cranes, 30–100 ft vacuum lift) to move, lift, flip, and position long/heavy parts and tools; attach accessories and ensure tools/fixtures are defect‑free.
Handle and dispose of hazardous materials (coolants, solvents) per MSDS using PPE, maintain personal and tool certifications, and check machine setup/in‑work parts to ensure safe working conditions.
