Emergency Department Nurse

Location:

Puyallup, WA

Emergency Department Beds: 46 (including 5 Safe Psych rooms)

Average Daily Patient Volume: 200 patients

Experience Requirements

Minimum of 2 years of Emergency Department experience required.

First-time travelers welcomed.

Patient Population

The Emergency Department caters to a diverse patient demographic ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics. Common patient presentations include:

  • Trauma
  • Gunshot Wounds (GSW)
  • Sepsis
  • COVID-19
  • STEMI (high volume)
  • Stroke
  • Diabetic Keto acidosis (DKA)
  • Mental health issues
  • Respiratory problems
  • Geriatric cases (falls and STEMI)
  • Adult Psychiatry
Patient Ratios

Day shifts: 1:4-5 (with flexibility to 5 based on acuity and staffing levels)

Required Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Crisis Prevention Institute/Management of Aggressive Behavior (CPI/MOAB)
Skills Required
  • General Emergency Department experience including:
    • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
    • Intravenous (IV) skills
    • Fundamental knowledge of intravenous medication administration and drips
    • Procedural sedation
    • Blood product administration
    • TNK administration (preferred)
    • Cardiac medication management
  • Recent experience with the EPIC electronic health record system is required.
Unit Support
  • Emergency Department Technicians support with glucose checks and iStat measurements.
  • 24/7 Respiratory Therapy availability.
  • Emergency Department Educator on-site.
  • Security is enhanced for patient and staff safety, available 24/7.
  • House Supervisor present around the clock.
  • Dedicated Social Work Services available in the Emergency Department.
  • Pharmacy support 24/7 for sedation medication and code assistance.
Charting System and Equipment
  • EPIC electronic health record system (recent experience required)
  • Alaris IV pumps
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system
  • Central and bedside telemetry monitoring
Orientation and Training
  • Day 1:
    New employee orientation, EPIC training (if needed), and mental health area rotation.
  • Day 2:
    Shadowing on a 12-hour shift with a preceptor.

Note:

Telemetry competency must be completed and passed before starting the position. Compliance with training and exams is handled by designated compliance personnel.

Scheduling Information
  • Shifts:

    Days/Mids (0700, 1100) and Mids/Nights (1500, 1900) available.
  • Work scheduled in a block of a week at a time, but shifts are subject to change based on department needs.
  • Scheduling is sensitive to individual preferences, with a schedule provided three weeks in advance.
  • Weekend shifts may vary according to unit needs.
