The sUAS Operator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) operations in support of Range Control and Range Management Branch activities. This position serves as the lead commercial drone pilot, ensuring all operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of the Navy/Defense (DoN/DoD), and installation-specific regulations. The sUAS Operator also plays a critical role in training, certification, and program development to enhance operational effectiveness across the Range Control enterprise.
The sUAS Operator reports to and receives work direction derivatives from the Government Lead.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute sUAS missions in support of Range Management operations, including:
- Aerial surveillance
- Range safety sweeps
- Range security monitoring
- Training and exercise support
- Obtain all required flight approvals and airspace clearances prior to operations.
- Coordinate closely with Range Control to ensure full deconfliction with manned and unmanned aviation activities.
- Serve as the lead commercial drone pilot, ensuring all operations comply with FAA Part 107, DoD, and installation-specific policies.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation measures to ensure safe flight operations.
- Maintain detailed and accurate flight logs, maintenance records, and mission data in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve sUAS training programs for Range Control personnel.
- Ensure all operators maintain required certifications, currency, and proficiency standards.
- Operate and maintain proficiency on Group 1–2 sUAS platforms, including mission planning systems, payload integration, and ground control stations.
- Apply analytical techniques to evaluate sUAS and counter-sUAS (C-sUAS) operations, identify capability gaps, and recommend improvements.
- Support development and refinement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), TTPs, and safety processes related to sUAS operations.
- Assist in assessing emerging technologies and recommending enhancements to improve mission capability and efficiency.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of DoD/DoN and installation-level regulations governing sUAS operations.
- Ideal candidate is a former Marine SNCO or Officer who has demonstrated experience operating Group 1–2 sUAS platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to develop SOPs, policies, and operational procedures.
- Experience planning and executing aviation or range-related operations.
