Solar Winds, Remedy, Windows or Linux Administration
Enterprise Monitoring handles Windows Servers 2022 and Linux Ubuntu servers for the Marine Corps, and a big part of that is taking care of our Solar Winds servers. We keep the monitoring system running so we can see what's going on across the network, what's up, what's down, what's slow, and what needs attention before it becomes a problem.
Most of the time we're checking alerts, fixing whatever Solar Winds decides to break that day, updating it, dealing with modules that don't want to cooperate, and making sure it's pulling in the right data from all the different devices and working with the DB team. When something goes wrong on the network, Solar Winds is usually the first place they will look, so it must stay healthy.
If something crashes, we need to be able to bring it back fast, especially if it supports a mission. So, a big part of the job is keeping our Solar Winds servers up and running. Virtualization is a big part of the job too. We use VMware, so we make sure everything stays stable. Same goes for storage, backups, and disaster recovery plans.
If something goes down, we need to be able to bring it back fast.
We work across the different networks NIPR and SIPR, so security is a constant thing. There's always another STIG to apply, another scan to clear, or another patch that needs to go out before someone starts asking questions.
On top of the technical stuff, I help the team and show them how things work and try to make sure they're ready when I'm not around.
A solid senior admin should be comfortable with:
* Understand Server Admin Risk Management Framework (RMF) requirements
* Understand vulnerability scans, patching cycles, and security audits.
* Locking down systems without breaking everything
* Documentation and Updates
* Maintain diagrams or notes others can use
* Navigate Linux comfortably (logs, services, permissions, etc.)
* Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, firewalls)
* Report issues
* Maintain security compliance

* Work with vCenter

* Applying STIGs

* What the backup plan is
* How to restore quickly
* How to prevent the same issue from happening again
Troubleshooting & Tier 3/4 Support

* Provide senior level escalation support to communications with the Government, Vendor, and Battle Captain.
* Monitor system performance, capacity, and availability across distributed environments.
