Job Description
Position:
Para educator I – Special Education, 2026‑27 school year. School District:
Higley Unified School District.
Location:
Cortina Elementary – Queen Creek, Arizona.
- Support HUSD Vision, Mission, and Goals.
- Instruct students in close proximity to the teacher, reinforcing material or skills introduced by the teacher.
- Assist with supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, lunch periods, and field trips.
- Notify teacher of any problem or special information about a student.
- Implement, under direction, behavioral plans developed by a team of parents and school personnel to modify behaviors conflicting with a positive academic and social environment.
- Work with special‑needs students in all instructional settings, including special‑education classrooms, general‑education classrooms, recess, and lunch.
- When necessary, restrain a student to prevent injury to self or others using CPI strategies; training provided.
- Assist students with personal care/activities of daily living, including feeding, toileting, diapering, positioning, transfer, and safety monitoring, with appropriate training.
- Assist students in meeting physical, emotional, and educational needs while adhering to I.E.P. guidelines and documenting activities for Medicaid reimbursement.
- Participate in meetings and service training as required.
- Safeguard and maintain confidentiality of student information even after employment ends.
- Perform all duties safely and prudently as directed by supervisors.
- High school diploma.
- Current CPR and First Aid cards required (no online classes).
- Capable of working with children one‑on‑one and in groups.
- Ability to work with students with various disabilities, including emotional, autistic, mildly mentally disabled, and non‑verbal.
- Positive relationship building with students and teachers.
- Skills and ability to perform job functions: instruction, computer use, basic academic matters, problem solving, and managing work assignments.
- Pass background and reference checks as stipulated by district standards.
- Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
- Frequent communication with students and staff, including accurate information exchange.
- Frequent interaction with students involving bending forward and downward, bending knees, sitting on floor, and returning to upright position.
- Move about on foot and remain standing while supervising students.
- Raise or lower objects ranging from 25–50 lbs.
- Exert force to move an object away from or towards the force.
- Ascend and descend small ladders with agility.
Noise level is usually moderate.
Employment Details- Term of employment:
Full‑time, 10 months, Monday‑Friday, 32.5 hours per week. - Salary classification:
Classified hourly salary schedule. - Evaluation:
Performance evaluated by Site Administrator and according to district policy. - Total paid holidays: 14.
- Retirement:
Participates in the Arizona State Retirement System; defined benefit plan provides lifelong monthly retirement income for qualified members. - Position type:
