Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med Surg/Telemetry unit in an acute care hospital with required EPIC charting and total joint experience.

Responsibilities
  • Work in a Med Surg/Telemetry unit with 48 beds across two buildings on the 3rd floor
  • Acute care hospital setting with a trauma level 2 designation
  • Patient ratios are 1:4-6 on nights, with LPNs and virtual nurses assisting
  • Patient population includes neuro and surgical cases, total joints, abdominal surgeries, joint replacements, vascular surgeries, and chronic pain management
  • Use of Epic EMR system;
    Epic experience is required
  • CPAP equipment and Airvo may be used on unit, with RT support;
    Bipap occasionally present
  • Telemetry monitored by monitor techs, but RNs interpret their own Draeger tele strips
  • 12-hour day shifts starting at 7 AM; schedule includes three 12-hour shifts per week
  • Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) required
  • Holiday coverage is in rotation with core staff
  • Float only to like units; if floated to higher acuity, assistance only (no patient load)
  • No on-call or standby responsibilities
  • Primary care nursing model is frequently used; candidates must be comfortable with this approach
  • Charge nurse or house supervisor available for support, with night shift having increased CNA needs
  • Fast-paced unit with high surgery admit and discharge volume (8-12 admits per day)
  • Black scrubs required for this unit
  • Initial unit orientation includes 1-12 hour shift plus a 12–14-hour day for competencies and computer-based modules
  • Accepts local clinicians
  • Must be flexible with schedule; block scheduling is not guaranteed but can be discussed
  • Candidates must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment with heavy patient assignments
Requirements
  • Active IL RN license required
  • Minimum of 2 years' RN experience, with at least 1 year in a surgical setting
  • Experience with total joint procedures, PCA pumps, TPN/Lipids, sepsis management, narcotic usage, and reversal drugs (e.g., narcan)
  • Required certifications: BLS (AHA) and NIHSS
  • Prior Epic EMR experience required
  • Ability to interpret telemetry strips
  • Ability to titrate heparin drips per protocol
