General Function

Responsible for handling food safely and maintaining a clean, organized work area. Operate department registers and process payments. Provide courteous and efficient customer service to shoppers and team members.

Reporting Relations

Accountable and reports to:
District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home;
Food Service Director;
Delicatessen Department Manager.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by showing care, concern, and patience.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner and encourages them to address staff by name when possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting them to desired products, loading/unloading heavy items, and noting any customer suggestions or requests.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and take customer orders.
  • Take orders at the delicatessen counter and coordinate with co‑workers to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Review orders and manage daily rotating list of products.
  • Follow proper sanitation procedures and keep work area clean and neat.
  • Inspect the status and appearance of food for freshness and readiness.
  • Maintain adequate food supply by preparing, finishing, and replenishing product as needed.
  • Anticipate product needs daily and develop or follow a production list.
  • Check in product, put product away, and review invoices.
  • Operate department registers, receive payment, and make change.
  • Remove trash in a timely manner.
  • Maintain strict adherence to departmental and company guidelines on personal hygiene and dress.
  • Adhere to company policies and store guidelines.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Wash dishes as needed.
  • Order product and supplies.
  • Deliver orders as required.
  • Price products for customers.
  • Assist in other areas of the store as necessary.
  • Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics
  • Understand and follow verbal or written instructions.
  • Write identifying information accurately.
  • Request supplies orally or in writing.
  • Solve arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Education and Experience

Less than a high school diploma or equivalent experience and six months or less of similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Visual clarity at distances greater than 20 inches and less than 20 feet without correction; color vision, depth perception, and field of vision.
  • Perform activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to dust, noise, equipment movement hazards, and electrical shock daily.
  • Occasional exposure to temperature extremes and cleaning chemicals or solvents.
  • Fast‑paced work environment.
Equipment Used to Perform Job
  • Telephone, fax, copier, intercom system, computer, calculator.
  • Kitchen utensils, hot wrapping machine, garbage disposal, trash compactor, cardboard compactor, box cutter, slicer, scales.
  • Delivery van, pallet jack, hot wrapper, knives.

Daily contact with the general public and customers, plus federal/state governmental or regulatory agencies regarding inspections.

Salary

The anticipated hourly starting wage for this position is $15.00 to $18.75 depending on experience.
