Job DescriptionGENERAL DESCRIPTION
The ABE Math and Science Instructor is a full-time position funded under a federal grant. This position reports to the ABE/ESOL Program Coordinator and is responsible for coordination, administration, and educational leadership as part of the Adult Basic Education Program.
Duties include the following:
Develop and deliver engaging, rigorous, standards-aligned lessons tailored to adult learners' needs and proficiency levels. Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages active participation, promotes subject acquisition, and supports student leadership. Assess students' math and science proficiency through formal and information methods and use data to drive instructional decisions. Provide constructive feedback and support to students to facilitate Math and Science skill development and academic progress.
Use a variety of teaching methods, materials, and technology to engage students and enhance their learning including applicable college-wide Learning Management Systems. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student learning. Attend professional development workshops in order to stay up to date on the latest teaching methods and technologies and maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades and progress.
- Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate area of specialization and three years of appropriate experience, in postsecondary education.
- Preferred MAPT certified or ability to complete certification upon hire.
- Previous experience in ABE program, academic advising, student services, and/or enrollment services.
- Experience in teaching ABE focused courses.
- Ability to engage diverse students.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of the team.
- Demonstrated experience in working effectively with low income, underserved adult learners and students who have not achieved a high school diploma.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
- High level of customer service skills and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a diverse group of clients at all levels.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
- Attend all mandatory DESE meetings.
- Attend professional development workshops and conferences.
- Expect to meet all required DESE professional development hours outlined in individual professional development plan.
- Prior teaching experience in HSIET/GED course subject is preferred.
- Instructor should be well versed in the DESE frameworks, cultural responsiveness, to promote equity and to differentiate for a diverse population of Adult Basic Education including students with a diagnosed disability or barriers to learning.
- Excellent organizational skills and strong communication skills.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- Ability to lead and conduct classroom courses and/or workshops.
- Ability to use technology in the classroom including applicable college-wide learning management systems.
- Online teaching experience.
- Ability to utilize a variety of teaching methods to engage all students.

- Use DESE and Program curricula for ABE classes.
- Monitor the progress of students and communicate with the ABE/ESOL program Coordinator.
- Attend weekly department meetings with the ABE/ESOL team to examine formative assessments and collaborate with other instructors/peers.
