Job Overview
UC Health is hiring a New Graduate Extern for the Med Surg 1st Floor unit for the Night Shift at West Chester Hospital. The med‑surg unit is a 36‑bed unit with patient‑to‑nurse ratios ranging from 4 to 6. The extern will support the department in delivering high‑quality care in a fast‑paced environment, specializing in cardiac/neuro patients.

- Graduate of a nursing program (ASN, BSN, or MSN) within the last 6 months.
- BLS Certification (required).
- Prior experience as an unlicensed assistive personnel in Patient Care Services (preferred).
- Basic computer skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of nursing theories and concepts and understanding of standards of professional practice.
- Competence in basic patient‑care tasks allowed by law.
- Receive precepted training and experience to prepare for the Ohio Board of Nursing licensure exam and future RN duties.
- Perform non‑nursing aspects of patient care as assigned or delegated by a supervising RN.
- Engage in population‑appropriate communication and support implementation of the plan of care under RN supervision.
- Observe changes in patient condition, report to RN, and record clinical data in the patient’s medical record.
- Perform treatments and procedures delegated by RN after demonstrating competence.
- Respond to medical emergencies; initiate CPR and assist in obtaining supplies.
- Reinforce education and teaching from RN/LPN on clinical equipment and other disciplines.
- Communicate observations and measurements to RN in a timely manner.
- Orient patients and visitors to the unit and update white boards.
- Respond to and utilize nurse‑call system, reception and phone duties, and retrieve information from computers as directed.
- Facilitate maintenance of a clean, safe, organized environment for patients and coworkers, including removing equipment, re‑ordering supplies, and reporting maintenance issues.
- Perform other duties as delegated.
