Field Geologist/Physical Science Technician Resource Assistant

Stewards Individual Placement Program enhances community development and resource stewardship. This role supports field geology tasks for Cibola NF & NG, including surveys of locatable minerals, abandoned mine lands (AML), and caves.
Responsibilities- Support geologists with minerals administration for hard‑rock mining & exploration, leasable/saleable mineral operations, AML closure and monitoring.
- Interact with the public on mining and USFS multi‑use mission; mostly field work with office time for data upload and organization.
- Develop GIS products, enter field data, write reports, and organize photos and imagery.
- Conduct strenuous field work: hiking steep terrain, carrying equipment, working in variable weather; some trips may require multi‑day camping.
- Degree in geology or a closely related science (e.g., environmental science, earth sciences, mine engineering, geohydrology, hydrology).
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Valid driver’s license, insurable by Conservation Legacy, and at least 3 years driving history or over 21 years old.
- Minimum age 18 and High School Diploma/GED.
- Must obtain a post‑secondary degree (Associate’s or higher) by end of service.
- Ability to work independently in office and field with minimal supervision.
- Basic map reading, GPS orientation, and aerial photo interpretation skills.
- Comfortable hiking cross‑country in rugged mountain environments.
- Experience with ArcGIS or Arc Pro and database management.
- $1000/month living allowance (pre‑tax).
- $50/month commuting allowance (pre‑tax).
- $4,750 Professional Development and Travel fund.

The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship that offers developmental and training opportunities. After 960 hours of satisfactory work and completion of an associate degree, participants may obtain a two‑year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility, enabling application to internal merit or Direct Hire Authority FS career positions.
