Summary

The ML Student Advocate position coordinates and facilitates the academic and support needs of identified students to successfully transition to the next grade level, complete high school, and promote the transition to postsecondary education or employment.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinate with school counselors, teachers and other staff to develop a list of students most at‑risk of not meeting state academic and achievement standards.
  • Identify challenges including limited education, cultural and language barriers, and other factors that students encounter.
  • Coordinate access to services available through school district and/or community that strengthen communication, self‑advocacy, and academic skills.
  • Facilitate understanding by student and family of district requirements toward graduation.
  • Collect and organize data as needed for compliance and accountability.
  • Participate in a variety of activities to enhance personal and professional skills.
  • Perform related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.
  • Maintain good human relations and interpersonal skills, demonstrate ability to keep confidentiality and show initiative when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Qualifications
  • Two years of study at an institution of higher education that meets the criteria of the Higher Education Act, Section 101(a). All classes must be at level 100 or higher, or an AA degree or higher.
  • Pass the ETS Para‑educator test.
  • Previous experience in an educational setting preferred.
  • Experience working with students and families of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Spanish bilingual/biliterate required.
  • Demonstrate flexibility with schedule changes as students’ needs change.
  • Ability to deal with students in a positive and confident manner; be fair and consistent when working with a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population; adapt to change and remain flexible; organize activities; manage student behavior; use good judgment to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Ability to build relationships and confidence of students and community.
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Flexibility in work hours.
  • Valid WA State Driver’s License.

Benefits

Health insurance benefits for employees working 630 hours or more per year include medical, dental, vision, life and long‑term disability plans through the School Employee Benefits Board (SEBB). Retirement benefits are provided through the WA State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Benefits may be prorated based on date of hire/hours per day. Paid leave benefits: 10 sick days, 10 paid holidays, and 3 personal days for 180‑259 day employees;

12 sick days, 13 paid holidays, 3 personal days, and at least 10 vacation days after the first year for 260 day employees.
