SUMMARY:
The position of Behavior Technician works under the supervision of the certificated teacher and other staff personnel to assist in accomplishing the goals and objectives of the instructional program within the school setting with high-risk students requiring 1:1 support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Experience in supporting diverse student needs academically and behaviorally at the elementary/middle and /or high school level classrooms.
- Develop plans, materials, and activities for students under the direction of the certificated teacher.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents and community.
- Experience in positive behavior supports preferred to maintain an environment conductive to learning.
- Understand and apply program activities, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information and records.
- Work collaboratively with supervising teacher and colleagues.
- Keep documentation/data for teachers when requested.
- Direct contact with students in the classroom.
- Ability to be trained to support adaptive daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, Also may include but not limited to medical procedures under the guidance of the school nurse.
- Willingness to teach independent living skills such as cooking, laundry, general personal hygiene under the direction of the certificated teacher.
- Ability to be trained to accommodate high risk students requiring 1:1 safety and behavioral supports under the direction of the certificated teacher or specialist.
- Assist with implementation of behavioral and instructional support plans, monitoring and report student behavior and performance by using behavioral strategies, positive reinforcement, social stories, peer facilitation under the direction of the behavioral specialist and certificated teacher.
- Monitor and assist students as needed in their daily routines across setting and transitions.
- Implements and models alternative communication strategies with students under the direction of the SLP and certificated teacher for the purpose of teaching student’s ways to effectively communicate.
- Intervenes to defuse situations using conflict intervention, crisis intervention and assist staff as appropriate. This includes evaluation of student behavior to support students at risk of harming themselves or others by following school/district approved procedures.
- Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Special Education Director or Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years of study at an institution of higher education, it must meet the criteria of the Higher Education Act, Section 101 (a). All classes must be at level 100 or higher, Or
- Associate’s degree OR
- Pass the ETS Para Pro Assessment test.
- Experience working with P-12 students.
- First Aid/CPR card or ability to obtain.
- Demonstrate basic computer literacy skills.
- Demonstrate consistent punctuality and attendance.
- Demonstrate flexibility with schedule changes as students’ needs change.
- Work in noisy and crowded environments.
- Previous experience with children or adults with disabilities preferred
