The Role in Brief

Gateway faculty facilitate student learning and actively participate in efforts to continually improve student success. As a learning facilitator, you will assess student learning outcomes, evaluate your own teaching effectiveness, and adapt instruction to support student achievement.

As an Adult Basic Education Instructor, you will support learners as they strengthen foundational reading, math, science, social science, communication, digital literacy, health, career awareness, college readiness, and academic skills that can help them progress toward additional education, career opportunities, and personal goals.

This position reports to the Dean, School of Pre-College and Momentum Programs.

Schedule and Assignment
  • Split-shift schedule: This position includes daytime instruction and evening instruction two nights per week.
  • Home campus: Racine Campus.
  • Additional assignment location: Teaching assignments will also include the Kenosha Campus and may vary based on student and program needs.

What You Will Actually DoTeaching and Learning
  • Deliver approved curriculum and make recommendations, as appropriate, to maintain course effectiveness.
  • Provide bilingual instruction and learner support in English and Spanish.
  • Teach across Adult Basic Education subject areas, including reading, math, science, social science, communication, digital literacy, health, career awareness, college readiness, and related foundational academic skills.
  • Effectively manage the classroom and learning environment.
  • Monitor and assess student learning outcomes.
  • Provide timely and frequent feedback regarding academic progress and performance.
Student Success and Inclusive Learning
  • Promote and participate in student recruitment, retention, and completion efforts.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, respect, and inclusive learning.
  • Support adult learners from varied backgrounds, experiences, and skill levels.
  • Create a supportive learning environment that encourages persistence, confidence, and continued educational progress.
Curriculum and Program Effectiveness
  • Monitor curriculum effectiveness and recommend updates or improvements when appropriate.
  • Assist with program evaluation and continuous improvement activities.
  • Assess teaching effectiveness and adjust instructional practices based on student needs and learning outcomes.
Professional and Institutional Engagement
  • Participate in advisory and/or institutional committees.
  • Maintain required professional credentials and continue professional development.
  • Remain current in the field, discipline, and instructional practices.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and institutional partners to support student and program success.
What to Know About Teaching at Gateway

Gateway faculty support the full college curriculum and serve a diverse range of learners. Faculty assignments are based on institutional and student needs and may include high school dual credit students, traditional college students, and adult learners across multiple instructional formats.

This position is based at the Racine Campus and includes assignments at the Kenosha Campus. Additional assignments may occur at Gateway campuses, centers, community locations, or other instructional sites based on program and student needs.

What You Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following education options:

Option 1: Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Adult Education, or Special Needs Education.

OR

Option 2: Bachelor's degree or higher with at least 30 semester credits in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Adult Education, or Special Needs Education.

AND all of the following:

  • Fluency in English and Spanish, including speaking, writing, and reading.
  • Experience working with at-risk populations.

  • Ability to manage complex and fast-paced assignments while remaining organized, detailed, flexible, and responsive.
