Ameri Corps Volunteer Position Description

The Racine Zoological Society, Inc. is a non-profit entity with a mission to foster an enlightening and affordable wildlife experience that improves the bond between people and nature. The Society will provide for the recreation and education of the people, the conservation of wildlife and wild places, and the advancement of science.

Through Ameri Corps, individuals of all ages and backgrounds address the nation’s education, public safety, environment, and/or human needs through service. The main focus areas of Ameri Corps include: getting things done, strengthening communities, encouraging responsibility, and expanding opportunity. Racine Zoo Ameri Corps Volunteers contribute to this effort by delivering high-quality conservation education to students in public schools throughout Racine County.

Volunteers will receive training in a variety of areas to support and enhance the Volunteer’s service to the students, including, but not limited to, proper animal handling and husbandry, classroom behavioral management techniques, and engaging students with conservation messaging.

A. Ameri Corps Volunteer Qualifications

Ameri Corps Volunteers will have the following qualifications

  • 18 years or older
  • U.S. citizen, or U.S. national or lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • Have a high school diploma/GED
  • Commitment to community service and ability to provide service for the complete 10 months of service
  • Required to pass a criminal background check
  • B. Essential Functions

    All of the following duties and responsibilities are essential position functions subject to reasonable accommodations. All position requirements listed indicate the minimum level of knowledge, skills and/or ability deemed necessary to perform the duties proficiently. This position description is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities, or requirements. Individuals may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities as requested by their supervisor (Ameri Corps Program Director) in alignment with the grant and not unallowable or prohibited activities and subject to reasonable accommodation.

  • Provide direct services to Racine Zoo Ameri Corps program participants via educational interpretive programming, as well as effective delivery of pre- and post-intervention assessments
  • Assistance in creation and delivery of educational interpretive programming
  • Animal handling and assist in maintenance of trained behaviors
  • Facilitate volunteer recruitment and training
  • Write reflections on service for Zoo and Ameri Corps publications
  • Act as a positive role model to students in the Racine Zoo Ameri Corps program
  • C. Non-Essential Functions

    Individuals may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities as requested by their supervisor (Ameri Corps Program Director) in alignment with the grant and not unallowable or prohibited activities and subject to reasonable accommodation.

    D. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Negative TB test required
  • Current tetanus booster required
