Position
Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance and repair of the fleet vehicles and mechanical and electrical equipment at the lift stations. Position's work week consists of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Field mechanics are required to be in a rotation for emergency stand-by calls.
Essential Duties- Performs various automotive, van, and truck repairs of water and wastewater vehicles light and heavy duty, including hydraulic brakes, air brakes, tune-ups, minor engine work (diesel and gasoline), mount and balance tires, repair of exhaust systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, power and manual steering systems, and standard and automatic transmissions.
- Performs lubrication and oil changes of cars, vans, pickups, trucks, and heavy equipment according to specifications. Establishes proper preventative maintenance schedules for all fleet vehicles. Oversees proper recycling and disposal of spent vehicle fluids.
- Exercise valves, maintains and repairs lift station motors, pumps, meters, generators and other major mechanical, electrical and hydraulic units of equipment, and physical structure in accordance with blueprints or manuals.
- Dismantles machinery or equipment to gain access to defective parts and repairs or replaces them using various tools. Cleans and lubricates equipment according to the manufacture's recommendations.
- Inspects each station as required, reads flow meters and gauges, generator run hours, electric meters, and records them. Must be able to interpret status of station.
- Puts holding tanks in and out of service in high flow or maintenance situations.
- Performs preventative maintenance on lift station equipment and keeps records of work done on equipment.
- Performs general station maintenance to keep stations in neat and orderly fashion.
- Works in conjunction with the sewer cleaning crew and plant staff to identify abnormal and high flow situations, as well as causes for lift station alarms and malfunctions.
- Navigates a computer screen, and interprets SCADA system and GIS data. Works with computerized maintenance program work orders and updating of computer information.
- Must become familiar with The Capacity, Management, Operations and Maintenance Program (CMOM), and understand the ramifications of a by-pass in the collection system.
- Must become familiar with the Racine collection system and safety sites.
- Sets up 6-inch portable pumps and generators. Plumbing and welding, as required.
- Trained in confined space entry regulations and is able to make entries.
· Adheres to all Racine Wastewater Utility safety procedures as well as Utility work and safety rules.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School graduation, or GED equivalent is required.
- 5 years of prior verifiable professional mechanical experience working with commercial vehicle maintenance, pumps, compressors, blowers, or engines in an area related to industrial plant or commercial automotive maintenance; or a combination of years and education is preferred.
- Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Collection Systems Subgrade (SS) certification is required within 1 year of hire.
- Good computer skills, including working knowledge of SCADA systems, City Works, and GIS software.
- A valid state-issued motor vehicle operating license and Class B CDL with a tanker endorsement is required within 6 months.
- Mechanical training and certification in HVAC, pipe fitting or electro-mechanical technology is a plus.
- Technical training in automotive diagnostic repair technology is a plus
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Ability to apply good work practices by planning work and utilizing materials efficiently.
- Ability to plow snow and perform landscape duties.
- Skill in analyzing, diagnosing, correcting mechanical failures and defects; including a working knowledge of mechanical functions, principles and techniques.
- Knowledge and ability to analyze, diagnose, and correct vehicle mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical failures and defects; and use specialized tools and equipment common to garage maintenance functions.
- Must have good mechanical aptitude, verifiable by past work experience.

- Ability to utilize, interpret, and apply a variety of advisory data and information such as instructional pamphlets, blueprints, line diagrams, meters, gauges, operation and maintenance manuals, charts, and graphs.
