Environmental Engineer II

Location: Radford, VA

Position Summary

BAE Systems is seeking an Environmental Engineer II to support environmental compliance activities at its Radford, Virginia facility. This position is responsible for helping ensure compliance with federal and state environmental regulations, permits, consent decrees, and internal environmental requirements.

The Environmental Engineer II will work closely with operations and other site functions to support hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, regulatory reporting, permitting, environmental inspections, sampling, training, and other compliance initiatives within a large chemical manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state environmental regulations, consent decrees, permits, and site requirements.
  • Prepare and submit required environmental and waste reports, including:
  • Biennial Hazardous Waste Reports
  • Tier II Reports
  • Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Form R
  • TSCA-related reporting
  • EPCRA-related reporting
  • Support hazardous and non-hazardous waste management and compliance activities.
  • Work with operations departments to communicate environmental requirements and define responsibilities related to compliance efforts.
  • Support management and compliance of Central Accumulation Areas (CAAs) and Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAAs).
  • Prepare and submit environmental permit applications and permit modifications as required.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies to ensure understanding of and compliance with applicable environmental regulations and requirements.
  • Participate in environmental audits and regulatory inspections.
  • Perform and support routine environmental compliance inspections.
  • Collect environmental samples and maintain appropriate documentation, including chains of custody.
  • Identify and use appropriate sample collection and storage containers.
  • Develop and/or provide environmental compliance training as needed.
  • Maintain environmental records, documentation, and compliance data.
  • Support special projects and assignments as directed by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental or STEM-related discipline, such as:
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Environmental Science
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Related technical discipline
  • At least two years of related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary and diverse team.
  • Ability to work in and support a fast-paced, large-scale chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with environmental reporting, monitoring, or compliance software applications.

Environmental Compliance Experience

The ideal candidate will have experience in areas including:

  • State environmental reporting and regulatory compliance.
  • Environmental permit maintenance and compliance.
  • Hazardous waste management and compliance monitoring.
  • Universal waste management and compliance monitoring.
  • Non-hazardous waste management and compliance monitoring.
  • Working with environmental regulatory agencies.
  • Familiarity with Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) regulations and personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of environmental compliance, reporting, permitting, or waste management experience.
  • Wastewater compliance or environmental management experience.
  • Environmental permit writing experience.
  • Experience supporting government clients or working within government-regulated environments.
  • Government compliance experience.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or another related STEM discipline required based on the stated minimum qualifications.
  • Master’s degree in an environmental-related discipline listed as required in the original position requirements; confirmation of this requirement is recommended
