Overview
CGI Federal is looking for a UNIX system engineer to help support a program for the Army's PL ALTESS contract. PL ALTESS, or Product Lead for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology Enterprise Systems and Services, provides IT services and support to the Army and Department of Defense. As a managed service provider, ALTESS delivers infrastructure, platform, and application services across data centers and commercial clouds, modernizing IT systems by migrating them to the cloud and managing mission‑critical applications to ensure Army readiness.
ALTESS oversees IT service delivery across hosting locations, aligning with DoD digital transformation strategies as part of PEO Enterprise.
This position is located in Radford, VA.
Note: content reflects duties, responsibilities, and qualifications for a Senior UNIX System Engineer in a mixed environment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux/Oracle Enterprise Linux and Solaris UNIX.
Responsibilities- Work with the existing UNIX team to manage, maintain, deploy, troubleshoot and support servers in a mixed customer environment.
- Plan, execute, and implement new system hardware and software; create and maintain team technical instructions, operating procedures, and policies as needed.
- Monitor and tune system performance; oversee ongoing operation of servers; harden servers and report overall security and operational status.
- Recommend improvements to the enterprise and manage new software/hardware integrations; provide utilization reports using existing tools to identify problems and corrective actions.
- Demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork; provide lifecycle support for a mixed environment of vendor equipment in the datacenter, including firmware version control and preventive maintenance.
- Recommend, demonstrate, and implement technologies to expand, upgrade, and increase the efficiency of the current environment.
- CompTIA Security+.
- Experience in Computer Science or IT.
- Computing Environment (CE) Certification (e.g., Red Hat) – can be waived for 30 days after project join date.
- Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.
- Five or more years' experience as a Unix Systems Administrator or IT Engineer with automation experience.
- Three or more years' experience in patch management with knowledge of applying security updates via YUM and RPM.
- Three or more years' experience in environments with complex networks; familiarity with VLANs, troubleshooting tools (ifconfig, netstat, ssh, telnet); ability to harden systems using firewalld/iptables and hosts.
- Three or more years' experience managing a large pool of local users via the command line.
- Three or more years' experience creating and following Standard Operating Procedures for repeatable processes, disaster recovery, and problem resolution.
- Three or more years' experience configuring and maintaining key services (DNS, SFTP, SMTP, NTP).
- Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to be a team player.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent years of experience.
- Three or more years' experience with SELinux and advanced management and configuration of SELinux.
- Experience supporting Cybersecurity patch management and STIG/SRG/RMF/SCA-V/CORA frameworks.
- Experience deploying large-scale hardware and software system enhancements/upgrades for distributed sites.
- Experience with current and emerging network and infrastructure management technologies.
