Job DescriptionReporting to the Police Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant at Radford University is responsible for exercising supervisory responsibility of police officers and other staff assigned. Overall responsibilities include addressing personnel issues under University guidelines and applying sound leadership skills. The Sergeant will work with a diverse University population to enforce federal, state and local laws, while addressing safety, security, and crime prevention.
Required QualificationsDemonstrated progressive law enforcement experience which demonstrates accomplishments in meeting goals and objectives and comprehensive knowledge of University policy. Must possess Department of Criminal Justice Service law enforcement certification and successfully complete the department's Field Training Program. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, law enforcement techniques, procedures, operations, investigations, court procedures, crime prevention, safety, security, as well as broad knowledge and experience of police procedures, principles, and techniques.
Demonstrated leadership and/or supervisor experience, including professional development, training and personnel guidance. Ability to work with a culturally diverse department and University community. Demonstrated experience with computer systems, such as Microsoft Office. Ability to use independent judgment and exercise considerable restraint under stressful situations, to perform strenuous physical activities such as running, lifting, jumping, bicycling, climbing and to operate a motor vehicle at high speeds in adverse conditions.
Must possess DCJS law enforcement certification.
Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of Law Enforcement software and information systems. Experience with Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission accreditation standards. Experience with community policing programs. Have a working knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. Knowledge of performance management systems and actions related.
