University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), operating within Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, provides comprehensive physical, mental, dental, and sex offender treatment services to individuals involved in the New Jersey criminal justice system. With a $150 million budget and approximately 1,000 staff, UCHC delivers compassionate, evidence‑based care in correctional settings.

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care seeks a Per Diem Staff Nurse for East Jersey State Prison in Rahway, NJ. The Nurse will use the nursing process to address a range of health‑care needs in an ambulatory setting, working collaboratively with health‑care professionals and security officers. The role is guided by nursing protocols and involves team‑leading responsibilities as assigned.

• Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate patients (ages 18–64 and 65+) and their families within the correctional framework.
• Demonstrates respectful, considerate, and courteous communication in all interpersonal relationships.
• Applies current knowledge to maintain a safe environment for delivering health care to inmate patients.
• Maintains professional skills and engages in ongoing professional development to enhance correctional nursing practice and promote a positive institutional image.
• Adheres to personnel policies to support the effective operation of the health‑care unit.

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.
• Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred.

• CPR Certification required.
• Valid Driver’s License required; must possess a vehicle or alternative means of transportation between sites.

Must be physically capable of performing CPR for at least 10 minutes and of lifting up to 45 pounds of an emergency treatment bag. Assistance in lifting and rotating non‑ambulatory patients (up to 50 pounds) may be required.
