Merck & Co., Inc. is seeking an Automation Scientist for the Screening & Compound Profiling group at our Research Laboratories site in Rahway, NJ. The candidate will join our Automation & Informatics team to support high‑throughput screening (HTS) and compound profiling across therapeutic areas including oncology, immunology, neuroscience, cardiometabolic, and infectious disease.

Responsibilities
  • Operate automated liquid handling and screening systems to execute biochemical and cell‑based assays with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize automated equipment and workflows to improve reliability, scalability, and throughput.
  • Identify workflow issues, diagnose technical problems, and implement hardware or software solutions that enhance screening operations.
  • Utilize data visualization tools to analyze, present, and interpret complex assay results for scientific decision‑making.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and cross‑functional teams to integrate new assays and workflows on automation platforms.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to colleagues on automation operation and troubleshooting.
  • Adhere to SOPs, maintain detailed documentation, and ensure data integrity and traceability.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering or a related field (≈10years of laboratory automation experience) OR an advanced degree (M.S.) with ≈7years of experience.
  • Hands‑on expertise with laboratory automation platforms used for HTS (e.g., integrated robotic systems, liquid handlers, plate handlers, incubators).
  • Proficiency in laboratory instrumentation such as low‑volume bulk dispensers, acoustic sample transfer devices, and detectors in standalone or integrated modes.
  • Experience supporting biochemical and/or cell‑based assays, including arrayed CRISPR screens in a screening context.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate preventive maintenance, engage vendors, and manage service relationships.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for automation hardware, software, and process‑level issues.
  • Track record of optimizing automated workflows to boost operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Excellent attention to detail, documentation habits, and adherence to SOPs.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent requests, prioritize tasks, and work independently.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills with scientists, engineers, and stakeholders.
  • Volunteer to provide technical guidance and training to team members.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with High Res integrated automation platforms running Cellario Scheduler.
  • Experience with Beckman Access systems running Tempo scheduling software.
  • Experience with Mosaic Sample Management platform and Tempo Fulfillment Module (TFM).
  • Ability to assess emerging laboratory technologies, including AI, to streamline workflows.
